Complex Engineering Problem (CEP) Descriptive Form

Course Code: ME-321

Course Name: Theory of Machines-I

Concerned Teacher: Mr. Tahir Asif

Problem Statement:

Spur gears are the most easily visualized common gears that transmit motion between two
parallel shafts. Because of their shape, they are classified as a type of cylindrical gears. Since
the tooth surfaces of the gears are parallel to the axes of the mounted shafts, there is no thrust
force generated in the axial direction. Also, because of the ease of production, these gears can
be made to a high degree of precision. On the other hand, spur gears have a disadvantage in
that they easily make noise. Generally speaking, when two spur gears are in mesh, the gear
with more teeth is called the “gear” and the one with the smaller number of teeth is called the
“pinion”.
“The phenomenon when the tip of tooth undercuts the root on its mating gear is known as
interference.”
A grass cutting machine company manufactures cutting machine which carries two gear wheels
mesh externally and are giving a velocity ratio of 3 to 1. The teeth are of involute form ;
module = 6 mm,
addendum = one module,
values of pressure angle are 14.5°, 20° and 23°.
The pinion rotation can be taken from at 85 to 100 r.p.m any value
Determine :
1. The number of teeth on the pinion to avoid interference on it and the corresponding number
of teeth on the wheel,
2. The length of path and arc of contact,
3.The number of pairs of teeth in contact, and
4. The maximum velocity of sliding.
Another manufacturing competitor of the above mentioned company changes its module from
6 mm to 9 mm, how it will affect the
a. Path of contact
b. Arc of contact
c. Interference
d. Velocity of sliding
Discuss the effect of module on all above mentioned parameters and suggest the optimum value
of module from 6 to 12 mm for above mentioned parameters.

Submission Guidelines for Students

 Students should submit the assignment in groups. Each group should contain maximum
05 students.
 Each team should submit a team name along with list of names and roll numbers of all
team members.
 The contribution of each group member should be written specifically at the start of the
report. No report will be accepted without the contribution page.
 The report should be in Microsoft Word format. No hand-written assignments will be
credited so you can use MS equation editor or similar software package to show your
design calculations and mathematical relations.
 The report should contain proper definition of the given problem, background research,
goal statement, task specifications, design alternatives, selection process, design
calculations, and analysis.
 Separate marks will be given for neat and organized report.

Three spur gears transmit power from a motor shaft to a machine shaft installed in an aircraft
in a given geometric arrangement. The middle gear acts as an idler and is supported by two
bearings.
Find:
(a) Determine the radial load on idler shaft bearings for a given direction of motor shaft
rotation.
(b) Determine the radial load on the bearings for the motor shaft rotation opposite to (a).
(c) Give an explanation as to why answers to (a) and (b) are different if they are.
You can make the following assumptions.
1. The gears mesh along their pitch circles.
2. All the gear tooth loads are static and are transmitted at the pitch point.
3. Friction losses in the gears and bearings are negligible.
4. Shaft bending deflections can be neglected.
