Tutorial on Single phase induction motor

1. A 1-kW, 120-V, 60-Hz capacitor start motor has the following parameters for the main and
auxiliary windings (at starting): Zmain = 4.82 + j 7.25 ohm (main winding) and Zaux = 7.95 + j 9.21
ohm (auxiliary winding). (a) Find the magnitude and phase angles of the currents in the two
windings when rated voltage is applied to the motor under starting conditions. (b) Find the value
of starting capacitance that will place the main- and auxiliary winding currents in time
quadrature at starting. (c) Repeat part (a) when the capacitance of part (b) is inserted in series
with the auxiliary winding.
2. A 500-W, four pole, 115-V, 60-Hz single phase induction motor has the following parameters
(resistances and reactances are in ohm): R1,main = 1.68, R2,main = 2.96, X1,main = 1.87, X2,main = 1.72,
Xm,main = 60.6, core loss = 38 W, Friction and windage loss = 11.8 W. Find the speed, stator
current torque, power output and efficiency when the motor is operating at rated voltage and
slip of 4.2 %.
3. A test on the main winding of a 1-kW, 4-pole, 220-V, 50-Hz single-phase induction motor gave
the following results:
No-load test: Vo = 220 V, Io = 3.8 A, Po = 185 W, R1 = 1.6 ohm
Rotor-blocked test Vsc = 85 V, Isc = 9.8 A, Psc = 390 W
(a) Calculate the parameters of the circuit model assuming that the magnetizing reactance
hangs at the input terminals of the model.
(b) Determine the line current, power factor, shaft torque and the efficiency of the motor at a
speed of 1440 RPM. (Refer solved Example 10.2 of Nagrath & Kothari )
4. Discuss qualitatively that a single-phase induction motor is somewhat inferior to a poly-phase
motor using the same rotor and the same stator core.
