September 12,2019

Preffered By: Salvador Constantino

I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson 75% of the will be able to:
Illustrate and calculate the measures of position of quartiles in ungroup data.

II. Subject Matter: Measures of Position for ungroup data quartile.

C. Motivation:
The shoe sizes of 10 people in a survey are: Me Sir.
8,9,9,7,10,6,7,8,9,

Can anyone find the median in the set data

Okay student1 The formula of finding the median sir is

finding the middle most no.in the no. of set
Correct, sir.

You need to arrange it in ascending order first.

6,7,7,8,8,9,9,9,10
So what is our median class 9 sir
Good class now that you found the median our Okay Sir.
lesson is just the continuation of this median

D. Presentation: Yes Sir.

Kindly look at page 366 kindly read. A
Quartile are the score points which
divide distribution into four equal
twenty-five percent(25%) of the
distribution are below of the first
quartile, Fifty percent(50%) are below
the second quartile, and the seventy
five(75%) are below the third quartile.

Q1 is called the lower quartile andQ3

is the upperquartile.Q1< Q2<Q3,
where Q2 is nothing but the median.
The difference betweenQ3 and Q1 is
the interquartile rage. Since the
second quartile is equal to the
median, the steps in computation of
the median by identify the median
class is the same as the steps in
identifying the Q1class and the Q3
class.
Yes Sir
As you see in the pages366

That 25% of the data has a value of

less than equal toQ1 and in50% of the
data has a value of less than equal to
the median or Q2 and also in 75% of
the data has the value of less than
equal to Q3.

Example 1.In the book The owner of a

coffee shop has recorded that number
of customers who came into his came
each hour in a day. The results were
14,10,12, 9, 17, 5,8,9,14,10 and 11.
Let’s find the lower quartile and the
upper quartile of the data ,which
means we need to find the Q1 and the
Q3 .
Solution:

Arranged the data in ascending order, it Yes sir. Yes sir. Like in the median pattern
look like this. sir
5, 8,9,9,10,10,11,12,14,14,17. As you can
see our least value datais5 and the
greatest value data is 17. Yes class you
can us MM To find the lower quartile or
the Q1 is the we need the value that is
between the middle value and the least
value in the data set. So the lower quartile
is9. To find the upper quartile is the value
that is between the middle value and the
greatest value in the dataset. Sot the
upper quartile is14

Other solution: In finding the Q1and Q3

Step1 .Arranged the data in ascending
order

Step2. Use the formula ¼ ( n + 1) = Q1

Step3. Substitute for the total no.in a set.

¼ ( 11 + 1) = Q1
3 = Q1

Let count, in the givenset3 counts

5, 8,9,9,10,10,11,12,14,14,17.
3 counts

So the value of our Q1 = 9

Step4 Lets solve for the value of Q3. What is our answer?

¾ ( n + 1 ) = Q3
¾ ( 11 + 1 ) = Q3
¾ ( 12 ) = Q3
9 = Q3

Lets count 9 times from 5 14 Sir is oyr Q3

5, 8,9,9,10,10,11,12,14,14,17.
9 counts Yes Sir same answers

So our Q3 = 14

Did we have the same answer in our

upper solution.

Mendenhall and Sincich method n

= no. of elements

Lower Quartile (L) = position of Q1 = ¼

(n + 1)

Roundup to nearest whole no. if falls in

two digit integers

and

Upper Quartile (U) = Position of Q3= ¾ (

n + 1)

Round down to the nearest whole no. if

falls in two digit integers.

Example.2

In a certain data set:

( 1,3, 7,7,16,21,27,30,31) and n = 9

to find the Q1 use the formula:

Position of Q1= ¼ (n+1 )

¼ (9 + 1)= 2.5 roundup to the nearest

whole integer which
is 3

Position of Q3 = ¾ ( n + 1)

¾ ( 9 +1) = 7.5 round down to the

nearest whole integer which is7

Activity1 By pair
Write it in a ¼ piece of paper

Find the first quartile Q1,Q2 and Q3 , Arrange in ascending.

given the scores of 10 students in the
students in their mathematics activity
using the method of Mendenhall and 4,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,14,15
Sincich Method.

4,9,7,14,10,8,12,15,6,11 Q1 = ¼

( 10+1) Q1 = 2.75

Roundup to 3
Q1= 3

Q3 = ¾ ( n + 1)

Q3 = 8.25

Round down to 8

Q3

E. Generalization

What is our formula in Getting Q1 and Q3 Q1=1/4 (n + 1 )

Class
Q3 = ¾ ( n + 1)

IV. Evaluation

Answer it in¼ piece of paper.

Find the First Quartile and the Third Quartile in the given scores of 10 students in
mathematics activity using Mendenhall and Sincich Method.
