The passage discusses using oregano and lemon grass as natural mosquito repellents due to compounds in their oils. A study found that a mixture of these plants can effectively repel mosquitoes.

Oregano and lemon grass were discussed as natural mosquito repellents.

Compounds like carvacrol in oregano and oils in lemon grass have insecticidal and insect-repelling properties.

THE PROBLEM

Rationale of the Study

Nowadays, Philippines is one of the countries in the world that suffers from a

dilemma called dengue. Dengue is a deadly disease that can be spread through a bite of

mosquito called Aedes Aegyptus. The symptoms of dengue include high fever, severe

headache, joint and muscle pain, vomiting, skin rash and mild bleeding.

If this will not be treated immediately it may result to fatality. But did you know

that there are a couple of wonder plants that can be used in the garden and in the house

to repel mosquitoes? One of these is the oregano, that is commonly found in the

Philippines. Oregano contain many compounds, one of them is carvocrol-natural insect

repellant. This compound is also found in plants like mint and thyme.

Oregano oil was shown in studies to be an effective natural mosquito repellant.

This study found Oil of Oregano repel mosquitoes better than traditional chemical

repellants like DEET. Research has shown a solution of 2% oregano oil makes an effective

mosquito repellant.

Lemon grass is reportedly has a wide variety of therapeutic application. With

limited research and studies conducted on humans.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND RELATED STUDIES

This chapter represents the comprehensive review of related and significant

literature and studies conducted here and abroad. The reviews had been used as baseline

in developing the study.

Related Literature

Moises Angelo Gabuntin (2009) affirmed that oregano is the name given to several

species of plants whose leaves when dried impact a particular flavor to food. The essential

oil of oregano is a powerful anti-microbial and has even been tested and used at K-state

to sterilize plant cell cultures in tissue culture experiments. In these trials, oregano oil

was strong as chlorine bleach .It can be considered as mosquito repellant.

New Tech Bio (2015) determined that Lemon grass is very popular and used for

medicinal, food and insect repellant products.

Edmon Agron (2008) defined that lemon grass is a genus of about 55 related grass

species or varieties. Lemon grass has insecticidal properties and the extracted oil is used

in insect repellants and insecticidal sprays.

Helmenstine (2011) identified that insect repellant is any chemical or natural,

that causes insects to make directed, oriented movements away from the source of

repellant. And lemon grass can be used as natural insect repellant.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, materials, procedures, data collection

and statistical treatment necessary in the analysis of the data.

Research Design

The researchers make use of experimental method. The experimental method

involves manipulating one variable to determine if changes in one variable cause changes

in another variable. This method relies to control variables, random assignment and the

manipulation of variable to test a hypothesis.

Population and Sample

In this study, the researchers had used simple random sampling to determine the

sample. Data was gathered from 15 respondents including the owner of such households

as well as teachers of Burgos National High School who have their own classroom.
Chapter IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS OF DATA AND INTERPRETATION OF FINDINGS

This chapter focuses on the presentation of gathered data, the details of analysis

made and the interpretations of the findings.

Data are presented through table with corresponding text mat interpretation.

Table 1

Odor of the Oregano and Lemon Grass Mosquito Repellant

Rating Description F %
5 Extremely Pleasant 0 0
4 Very Pleasant 3 20
3 Pleasant 7 46
2 Moderately Pleasant 4 27
1 Unpleasant 1 7
Total 15 100

Legend:
5 Extremely Pleasant (EP)
4 Very Pleasant (VP)
3 Pleasant (P)
2 Moderately Pleasant (MP)
1 Unpleasant (U)

Table 1 shows the characteristics of the oregano and lemon grass mosquito

repellant in term of odor.

Based on the evaluation we made, three or 20% of the respondents rated the

oregano and lemon grass mosquito repellant very pleasant. While, seven or 46% of the

respondents rated it pleasant, four or 27% of them rated it moderately pleasant and

one or 7% rated it unpleasant. Furthermore, none or 0% of them rated it extremely

pleasant.
Chapter V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter contains summary, conclusions and recommendations of the study.

Restatement of the Problem

This study aimed to make a mosquito repellant out of oregano and lemon grass.

Specifically, it looked into the:

1. What are the characteristic of Oregano and Lemon grass as Repellant in

terms of Odor?

2. On which of the setups performed and trials conducted delivers into a

highly effective mosquito repellant; and

3. How long will it takes to repel the mosquitoes?

Summary of Findings

The following findings are drawn based from the data gathered.

1. 7 out of 15 samples or 46% rated the odor of the mosquito repellant made of

Oregano and Lemon Grass, pleasant.

2. The 300 grams of oregano leaves and another 300 grams of lemon grass in

350 ml of water is highly effective in making mosquito repellant.

3. Majority of the samples/respondents rated moderate in the time of repelling

the mosquitoes using the mosquito repellant out of oregano and lemon grass.
