SOP for MDBFP and TDBFP Paralleling

1 PURPOSE
This Procedure is intended to provide guidance and instructions for carrying out
pump change over from MDBFP to TDBFP during normal operation.

2 Scope
This Procedure is applicable to TDBFP and MDBFP located at TSPL.

3 Input
Not Applicable

4 Output
Not Applicable

5 Responsibility
Field operator, desk operator, Shift in charge

6 System Description
The function of BFP is to transfer the condensate water from De-aerator to boiler.
There are three pumps (1*60% capacity MDBFP) & (2*60% capacity TDBFP).
During unit start up, motor driven BFP is operated first. Later on, Turbine driven
BFP is taken into service .Both BFP’s flow should be matched for parallel
operation otherwise it may lead to unloading of pump. This paralleling operation is
to be done with utmost care to avoid any fluctuation in feed water flow which, in
supercritical boilers, will cause changes in unit load, steam temperature .

7 Abbreviation
7.1 MDBFP- Motor driven boiler feed pump
7.2 TDBFP- Turbine driven boiler feed pump
7.3 MOV- Motor operated valve
7.4 SOP-Standard Operating Procedure
7.5 CRH-cold Re-heat

8 Procedure

Initial condition
 MDBFP running with scoop on auto.
 FW master in manual
 MDBFP Min r/c CV on auto
 TDBFP rolled to 3000rpm
 TDBFP min R/c 100% open
 TDBFP discharge MOV closed

Operation
 Put TDBFP on ADS control.
 Reset Auto Trip reset “at TDBFP controller faceplate.
 Increase TDBFP speed through TDBFP controller up to DP across discharge
MOV is <2MPA, TDBFP discharge press less.
 Open TDBFP discharge MOV.
 Increase TDBFP speed further to match with FW discharge header pressure.
 Increase TDBFP speed till its pump water into discharge header (point at
which there is a sudden increase in FW flow through TDBFP.
 Keep MDBFP control in auto and TDBFP controller in manual.
 Slowly increase TDBFP controller up to increase its FW flow.
 Maintain TDBFP flow(>600tph) by controlling the opening of RC valve
 When both TDBFP & MDBFP FW flow become equal then put TDBFP
controller in auto. as per feed water flow requirement.

11 Safety Measures
7.6 Ensure PPE's are worn. Ensure adequate lighting near the work place.
7.7 Ensure orderly execution of the entire activities with respect to mechanical
and electrical system.
7.8 While racking in and racking out the electrical breaker, wear mask Suit and
rubber gloves.
7.9 Wear cotton gloves while operating valves. Use F-rod, which is in good
condition for valves.

12 Environment
12.1 While starting/Stopping and during running of the equipment, check for any
oil leakage/Spillage, water leakage and for any abnormal sound.
12.2 If any oil leakage/Spillage is there, try to avoid the same spilling on the
ground by some temporary measures. Then inform to maintenance
department for arresting the same either online or offline depending upon
the condition. As a preventive measure to avoid any spillage/leakage of oil,
maintenance team will be checking thoroughly for any crack, looseness of
joints, and healthiness of oil seals during preventive maintenance.
12.3 If any water leakage is there, inform to maintenance department for
arresting the same either on line or offline depending on the condition.
