What Is Community Service?

Source: https://blog.prepscholar.com/what-is-community-service
Community service is when you work for free to help benefit the public or your
community. It is work done by a person or group of people. It is often done near the area
where you live, so your own community reaps the benefits of your work. Usually, people who
choose to do community service do so as volunteers, meaning that they choose to help out
because they want to do so. They do not get paid to perform these community services,
through sometimes food and small gifts, like a t-shirt, are given to volunteers.
Community service can have a lot of positive effects on people especially students,
such as helping them to develop skills, making new friends and allowing them to improve the
quality of life of others.
Some students are required to complete community service as part of a class
requirement in order to graduate high school or become a member of certain organisations,
such as the National Honour Society. Adults can also participate in community service as a
way to help others or if they are ordered to do so by a judge.

Some examples of community service:

People and Culture
 Donate or raise money for your local orphanage
 Tutor children during or after school
 Donate stuffed animals to children in hospitals
 Organise games and activities for children in hospitals
 Donate used books to your local library
Health and Environment
 Take care of cats and dogs at an animal shelter
 Clean up a local park
 Organise a community blood drive
 Plant a trees
 Free medical check-ups
Science and Technology
•Teach computer skills to the elderly
•Give free basic computer classes to school children

1.0 –INTRODUCTION

1.1 – INTRODUCTION TO THE PROJECT

This blood donation campaign is chosen as a way to instil and raise awareness amongst
the Kelantan Matriculation College (KMKt) students on the importance of blood donation and
a way to help hospitals maintain a regular supply of all blood groups. According to Dr Noryati
Abu Amin, the Director of The National Blood Centre, she said the supply of blood from the
A+ and O+ groups is slightly on the lower side compared with other blood types and that
there are a lot of myths and unfounded fears about donating blood (cited in The Star, 10
January 2017). With such campaign, hopefully these worries of the public on donating blood
can be eliminated and increase the numbers of donators.

1.3- PLANNING STAGE

1.3.1 – Ways how the project is conducted
The first step in organising this campaign is by arranging a meeting among the
group members on the 20th January 2019. Afterwards, we structure the organisation
into 4 responsibilities; head co-ordinator of the programme, project manager, secretary
and publicity co-ordinator and tasks are delegated to each member.
Next, the head co-ordinator of the programme finds a suitable venue and we
agree to carry out the blood drive at Ibnu Yunus Hall so the secretary is asked to issue
a letter of permission from the college to use the location. Meanwhile, the project
manager contacts the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital Blood Donation Unit to
schedule for their arrival and obtain specific information for the drive. We also recruit
some volunteers to help us with the preparation of the drive and on the day itself.
Necessary equipment is prepared such as tables, chairs and trash cans, along with
drinks and refreshments.
Finally, the publicity co-ordinator advertises the event to the students through
the college’s TV info and Whatsapp. Brochures are also made to be distributed to the

students in order to give more information on this blood donation campaign. Once the
drive is carried out on the 11th February 2019, the secretary writes a report and submits
it to the lecturer on the 21st February 2019.

3.0 - CONCLUSION

3.1 – FEEDBACK
Overall, from this campaign, we discovered that in order to instil awareness in the
importance of blood donation and increase the number of donators among students the first
challenge was to alter the students’ perceptions on their baseless fears in donating blood.
Meanwhile, feedback collected from the students themselves regarding this project revealed
that those who participated had good awareness on the significance of blood donation and felt
it as their social responsibility to do so. As those who did not partake in the campaign were
mostly due to their fear of the procedure and felt they did not have the gap due to their packed
schedule to join the programme.

3.2 – LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT

However, one of the weaknesses of the project was the poor choice of location which
was not strategic. Since the campaign was held at Ibnu Yunus Hall and this venue was not
located at the centre of students’ meeting point to their classes and laboratories, the numbers
of participants were very few as those who came were mostly those who were already
interested in donating. Besides that, some students who were approached by our
representatives refused to listen to the brief on the importance of blood donation and its
myths.

3.3 – RECOMMENDATION AND SUGGESTION

Further investigation in this project should be done in the aspect of location where
future organisers choose a more strategic site and use the social media to promote the
programme so that this project is able to reach more people and increase participation. On top
of that, for better results, future organisers can offer small incentives like certificates and
arranging food for blood donators would make it more appealing to them.
