CHAPTER I
The Problem and it’s Background

I. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY:

Nowadays having an early romantic relationship is a trend. Many teenagers

spend a lot of time thinking and talking about being in a relationship. It is a
common factor in the environment to experience plenty of socializing and having
friends is one of it, but relationship of being friends went up to the next level
where in both opposite sex developed to each that development resulted to that
we psychologically called love in which both person has the emotion and
personal attachment. Many of the people who are involved in an early romantic
relationship often say that it just serves as an inspiration and feeling that
someone is always there to motivate and accompanied them in times of ups and
downs in life. But as a student the question is how it does affect the
performance and emotion of each in their studies? How do they manage their
time in order for them, as a partner, to maintain that relationship they have?
Education is the highest trademark a person can have and being a senior
high student is a part in achieving our goals. In order to be more competitive and
confident in terms of studying they should be aware of the factors that can affect
their academic performance either it is good or bad. The purpose of this study is
to know if there is a significant relationship between the early romantic
relationship to the academic performance of the students. It aims to know what
would be the proper guidance for the students who are having a hard time
coping with their studies while having a relationship and those who are doing
fine. The importance of this study was to test whether the student was in a
relationship or not and if being in a relationship could negatively or positively
influence grades. And one of its main target is to allow students to realize the
potential consequences of being in an early romantic relationship.
II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

This research paper aims to gain concepts/information about early

relationship and how does it affects the academic performance of the students
who are involved. Besides this paper also attempts to answer the following
questions:

1. What is the profile of the ABM-AM3 students in terms of:

a. Gender
b. Age
c. Status
2. What is their academic performance?

3. Is there any relationship between the early romantic relationship to the

academic performance of the ABM-AM3 students?

and to other commitments.
Researchers . This study will assist the researchers so that they can further
study about this social topic and for them to gather more information about
their chosen subject related to this topic.

IV. SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY:

This research paper will intend to acquire inquiries about early

relationship on the academic performance of the students, its causes and effects.
Our focus is the students of ABM-AM3 of Phinma UPang College Urdaneta for
the school year 2017-2018. The researchers will survey to those students who are

CHAPTER II
METHODS AND PROCEDURES

INTRODUCTION

The researchers chose this topic to see the difference or the effects of having a
relationship while studying. Now a days having a relationship is widespread, the
researchers would like to study if being in a relationship help or not on the
academic performance of a student.

Romantic relationships, or the lack there of, play a role in the majority of
people in society. The researchers aimed not to just find out the impacts of
having an early romantic relationship while studying but also to provide
effective and efficient results. Its main goal is to identify if having romantic
relationships is healthy or unhealthy to the academic performance of ABM-03A
students.

RESEARCH SUBJECT:

In this descriptive study, one class of Phinma Upang College Urdaneta was
selected to participate in the research study. The subjects and respondents of this
study were the Grade 11 ABM-03A students of Phinma Upang College Urdaneta.
A total of fifty-four students (54) in which eight (8) are males and forthy-six (46)
are females. The distribution of the respondents of the study is according to their
gender.

RESEARCH DESIGN:

We researchers implemented a simple correlational design. The design used

survey questionnaires which were distributed to the respondents in order to
attain the main goal of the study which is to enumerate the impact of early
romantic relationship on ABM-03A students academic performance. The
survey tried to enumerate the cause and effect of the study and the status of the
respondents.

The design is a non-experimental correlation research. The design

investigated the relationship of the variables evaluated were academic
performance and early romantic relationship which involves peer pressure,
personal attitude, and academic factors.
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT:

In order to answer our sub-problems in our study, survey questionnaires

we’ve distributed to the respondents.

The survey questionnaire contained the Kate Burke’s form in which

respondents we’ve tasked to indicate whether it is always, often, seldom, and
never. It consisted of different questions aimed at the students involvement in
early romantic relationship and its effects to their academic performance. Each
questionnaire has two parts. The first part of the questionnaire is the profile of
the respondents (i.e name, age, section, gender). The last part were the question
about the early romantic relationship and its cause and effect to their academic
performance. It contains the Kate Burke’s form in which respondents we’ve
tasked to indicate whether it is always, often, seldom, and never.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURES

The measure used in the study was administered to 40 students from one
section of Phinma Upang College Urdaneta. The data gathering procedure of the
study utilized a self-administered correlational questionnaire because it managed
the time and efforts of the researchers and their ability to maintain the
respondents confidentiality.

The respondents were given a survey questionnaire to provide the necessary

data needed in the study. The measure was administered and the participants
were given as much time needed in the completion of the surveys, the measure
was conducted approximately ten minutes for the respondents analysis of the
questions and answer it afterwards. After gathering the data, the researchers
formulated the data according to the sub-problems of the study. The overall
purpose of the study is to express openness to questions or concerns pertaining
to the data.

Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation

This chapter presents the data collected from the respondents, describes the
analysis of data, followed by a discussion of the research findings. The findings
relate to the research questions that guided the study. Data were analyze to
identify, describe and explore the Factors of Early Romantic Relationship on the
Academic Performance of Grade 11 ABM-03Astudents. Data were obtained from
Kate Burke’s questionnaire, completed by 40 respondents (n=40), a 100%
response rate. The survey results are presented in tabular forms which include
the Factors of Early Romantic Relationship on the Academic Performance of
Grade 11 ABM=03A students. It also includes the analysis and interpretation of
the finding in the study.

Profile of the Respondents

Problem one of this study dealt with profile of the respondents. Table 1 on
the next page represents the profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender
and status. A total of 40 respondents were surveyed. Majority of them were
female with the percentage of 82.5 and a percentage of 17.5 for males. Next is the
age, wherein all respondents were aged 15-18. It can be gleamed o the table that
majority of the respondents were aged 16 which has an over-all percentage of 70 ,
while age 17 with 22.5%. Moreover age 18 has an over-all percentage of 5 and age

doing all their schoolwork or assignments before giving time in their
relationship and they are should provided constant advices to their
siblings.
- The professor will help the students and giving a time and manage their
academics performances.
- The researches will study and analyse about their study. So they can
gathering more informationabout their thesis.

Abstract

This study was conducted to discover the factors of early romantic relationship
to the academic performance amongst senior high Grade 11 ABM 03A students.
The variables looked at were dating status (single or involved), gender and age.
Variables were calculated on a survey measuring relationship and school
satisfaction. Forty grade 11 ABM 03A students attending PHINMA UPANG
College Urdaneta were surveyed. Approximately 27.5 percent of those surveyed
were involved in a relationship. The relationship assumed between grade point
average and dating status was not supported by the data. However, students
involved in a relationship experienced more stress when facing deadlines for
school. The data has not revealed any clear correlation in the study between
dating status and academic performance, through hopefully further research in
this idea will prove beneficial.
