Every Child Is Special Reflection
We honestly don’t have any idea about what this movie about until our teacher let us watch the
whole movie. At first it's just a story of ordinary boy with ordinary family. They are living in an ordinary
street with ordinary neighbours and usually an ordinary day. As the story continue, the movie also
getting more interesting. I really didn't expect that watching this film makes me reflect many things not
only to myself but the society and the systems that we have.
First reflection is about us. The protagonist in the film was a child with a condition called
"dyslexia". It's a condition where one person has a difficulty in reading and writing because words seem
to be floating and dancing around. While watching Ishaan (the protagonist) copping with these
problems, we realized a lot of things. Like problems are sometimes innate or by existence, but the more
important is how will you face these problems. Problems are correlated with the existence of human,
but if you perceive problem as challenge you can strive for best shot to conquer these problems. Sure,
we have different problems but sometimes these problems can be found as asset and weapon to
continue living.
Second the society. The movie portrays the teachers as Essentialist. They emphasize the
importance of obedience and competency as the means of success. They believe that life is a race and
students are trained to be a best runner. They mold student not to think for themselves, but to work
hard to feed themselves. If we try to look at our current society, we can say that movie reflects the true
scenario of 'what society we have today'. They cut the imagination and creativity of every child and
teach them to only look at quantitative aspects. Be an achiever, be the best, get the top, be the richest.
This society slowly forgets the importance of expression, the different aspects of intelligence. This
society disregards critical thinkers, and always looking for docile workers and hard workers. The
freedom to be imaginative is fading because of the pressure of competency in this existing society.
Third is the system. We have to admit that our existing systems are not healthy anymore.
Educational systems, Transportation systems, Political systems, etc. System makes the society
organized, but also system can destroy the whole society. Just for example the educational system. In
the movie, Ishann was pressured because he can't write nor read a simple sentence. He can't even solve
a simple mathematical equation. The school system wants a student who can read and write. But
unfortunately, Ishann is a slow learner and mentally challenged. Hence, the system concluded that he is
a waste, another garbage that non-recyclable. To compare it in reality, although we already give
importance to non-academic tracks like vocationals but I think we must improve our system. In
educational aspects, I believe that learning has its own pace. I think the system have to consider time as
an affecting variable to learning. We also must improve and widen our perspective when it comes to
multiple intelligence. The movie emphasize the existing reality that multiple intelligence does exist and
we have to give value to this. Maybe a person is not academically active but a good dancer. A student
who fails at written exams but good at speaking and oral aspects (recitation, reporting, etc.)
The movie represent the existing society that we have to deal. But also like the ending of a film, happy
ending also exist. We just have to find our own art style and shade of color to paint our own canvas.
