Problems:

1. 6 rows and 9 chairs per row

2. Let x = first number and y = second number. Since, (x+y) = 15 and (x-y) = 6, then (x² - y²) =
(x+y) (x – y) = 15(6) = 90

3. Let x and x + 2 be the two consecutive integers. The equation is (x + 2)² - x² = 2016 ⇒ x² +
4x +4 - x² = 2016 ⇒ 4x + 4 = 2016 ⇒ 4x = 2016 – 4 ⇒ 4x = 2012, ⇒ x = 503. If x = 503,
then x + 2 = 5=5. Thus, 503 + 505 = 1008.

4. Let x be the length, then the width is x – 7. Since the area is 4 more than the perimeter, then
we have x (x – 7) = 4 + 4x - 14 ⇒ x² - 7x = 4x – 10 ⇒ x² - 11x + 10 = 0 ⇒ (x – 1)(x – 10) =
0. Telling us that x = 1 or 10. Since x = 1 will yield a negative width, then the dimensions of
the rectangle should be 3 m x 10 m.

5. Let x be the age of Aldrin, then Lourd is x + 3 years. x(x + 3) = 154 ⇒ x² + 3x = 154 ⇒ x² +
3x = 154 = 0 ⇒ (x – 11)(x +14) = 0. This tells us that -14 is extraneous and 11 is the correct
age. Hence, Aldrin is 11 years old while Lourd is 14.

6. Let x be the width of the floor, then the length is x + 1. Based on the problem, we can have
the relation 520 = 26(x)(x + 1) ⇒ 20 = x² + x ⇒ x² + x – 20 = 0 ⇒ (x + 5)(x – 4) = 0. This
tells us that the width should be 4 meters and the length is 4 + 1 = 5 meters.

7. Let x be the width of the room, then x + 5 is the length. Getting the volume of the room, we
will arrive at the relation 8 (x)(x + 5) = 2,400 ⇒ x² + 5x = 300 ⇒ x² + 5x – 300 = 0 ⇒ (x +
20)(x – 15) = 0. Thus, the correct width is 15 meters and the length will 15 + 5 = 20 meters.

Challenge!
2019³+481³ (2019 +481)(20192 − (2019)(481)+4812 )
1. First, factor the numerator, 2019 x 1538+481² = =
2019 x 1538+481²

(2500)(20192 − (2019)(481)+ 481² (2500)[2019) x (2019−481)+ 481² (2500)[(2019) x 1538 + 4812 ]

= =
2019 x 1538+481² 2019 x 1538+481² 2019 x 1538+481²

Divide out the common factor, the answer is 2500.

2. From the given, we can have the relation (x + y)² = x² + 2xy + y² = 3² which tell us that x² -
2xy + y² = 9 – 3xy = 9 – 3 (3) = 0. Factoring now x³ + y³ = (x + y)(x² - xy + y²) = (3)(0) = 0.

3. 28 + 210 + 2n = (24 )² + 2(24 )( 25 ) + 2n = (24 )² + 2(24 )(25 ) + (25 )² + 2n - (25 )² = (24 + 25 )²

+ 2n - (25 )² = (24 + 25 )² + 2n - 210 . Thus, n = 10.

4. n² - 12n + 35 = (n–7)(n–5). Since a prime number cannot be factored into two distinct
factors, then it is easy to see that n=4 and n=8, by checking we have (-3)(-1) = 3 and 1(3) = 3.

5. Since x is a perfect square number, then we can say that x = (√𝑥)². Then the next perfect
square number will be (√𝑥 + 1)² = x + 2 √𝑥 + 1.
