1. Lubricants

Note: For axle-gear units, naval gear units and worm-gear units, special oil
recommendations apply.

1.1 Lubricating oils for helical-gear, bevel helical-gear and planetary-gear units

1.1.1 Required quality

The oils listed in table A are a selection of those recommended by Flender for helical-gear, bevel
helical-gear and planetary-gear units. These oils fulfil Flender’s essential requirements.

For its gear units, Flender approves only CLP oils which contain ingredients to DIN 51517-3 for
improvement of corrosion protection, resistance to ageing, and which reduce wear in mixed-friction
areas. The scuffing load capacity as determined by the FZG test A/8,3/90 must be at least 12.

In addition, the gear oils must fulfil the following quality requirements demanded by Flender:

S High grey-stippiness loading capacity with damage-force class 10 (or over) as determined by the
grey-stippiness test FVA 54

S Low degree of frothing with less than 15% froth formation in the Flender froth test

S Compatibility with residues of corrosion-protection agent and run-in oils used by Flender

S Compatibility with the paints used by Flender in its gear-unit interiors

S Compatibility with the elastomer seals of the shaft-sealing rings

S Compatibility with liquid seals between bolted-joint surfaces.

According to manufacturer’s information, the following gear oils are manufactured and supplied
worldwide in the above-mentioned quality as required by Flender (for exceptions refer to the footnotes
in table A).

Note: The use of gear oils which do not comply with the above quality requirements, may
invalidate our product guarantee. Every oil manufacturer or supplier of oil is
responsible for the quality of his product.

Always select the gear oil in accordance with the viscosity class stated on the rating plate on the gear
unit. If a different viscosity is selected, or oil of a type other than those recommended in these
instructions, the operator assumes the responsibility for its technical suitability. In order to minimise the
technical risk in such a case, we advise the use of a CLP oil of the above quality which should be
accompanied by a statement of suitability by the oil manufacturer.

Always comply with the information given on the rating plates and the written
Caution! instructions for the gear units.

BA 7300 EN 08.98 Page 3 of 9

1.1.2 Oil types

In table A, five types of oil are distinguished:

S Mineral oils

S Synthetic oils (polyglycol)

S Synthetic oils (poly-a olefin)

S Biologically degradable oils

S Physiologically safe oils (USDA H1)

The synthetic oils have a wider temperature range and a higher viscosity index (i.e. a flatter
viscosity-temperature gradient) than the mineral oils. Guideline values for temperature range:

mineral oils approx. –10 °C to +90 °C (short term +100 °C);

polyglycols and poly-a olefins approx. –20 °C to +100 °C (short term +110 °C);
bio-degradable oils (synthetic Ester) approx. –15 to +90 °C.

Note: The upper and lower temperatures (flash point, pour point) for using certain gear oils
may deviate widely from the figures stated. For these and other data and properties
of the gear oils, refer to the technical-data sheets published by the oil manufacturers.

According to the manufacturers, the following are the minimum periods during which the oils can be
used without undergoing any significant change in quality. They are calculated on the basis of an
average oil temperature of 80 °C:

– mineral oils, bio-degradable oils and physiologically safe oils: 2 years or 10000 hours of service

– synthetic oils (polyglycols and poly-a olefins): 4 years or 20000 hours of service.

The actual utilisation periods may be higher or lower (for temperatures over 80 °C). The general rule
is that an increase in temperature of 10 °C will halve the utilisation period.

1.1.3 Oil change

The degree of purity of the oil affects the operating reliability and life span of the oil and the gear unit.
It should therefore be ensured that the oil in the gear unit is clean. Follow the gear-unit instructions
regarding the first oil change after start-up as well as for subsequent oil changes. In the case of larger
oil quantities, an analysis should be carried out before cleaning or changing the oil.

When changing oil, the quantity of oil remaining in the gear unit should be kept as low as possible.
Generally speaking, a small residual quantity will cause no particular problems. Gear oils of different
types and manufacturers must not be mixed. If necessary, the manufacturer should confirm that the new
oil is compatible with residues of the old oil. When changing from a polyglycol oil to a new type of oil
or vice versa, the gear unit must be flushed thoroughly with the new type beforehand. Residues of old
oil must be completely removed from the gear unit.

Gear oils must never be mixed with other substances. Flushing with paraffin or
Caution! other solvents is prohibited, as traces of these substances always remain
inside the unit.
