Objectives/Standards for this lesson:  


TPLI will demonstrate the ability to perform a proper rugby pass during drills and mini games.
(S1.M5.7)
TPLI will demonstrate the ability to create space by spreading out the defense and making
quick cuts during mini games. (S2.M3.7)

Prerequisite skills or knowledge needed for success in this lesson:


 The ability to catch a ball
 The ability to run and change directions
 The ability to throw an underhand toss

Adaptations and/or extensions for this lesson:


 Use bigger or smaller rugby balls
 Reduce the size of the field
 Split the class up into different fields based off of athletic ability

Management issues for this lesson:


 Teams will be posted outside locker rooms
 When I blow the whistle, the game is over
 Students will meet me in the center of the room for instruction
 Equipment managers will get the balls from the equipment room
 When I say go (with direction on where to go for next activity)

Safety issues for this lesson:


 Students not paying attention to the ball and getting hit in the face. I would remind
students to keep their eye on the ball.
 Students running into each other. I would remind them to keep their head up and pay
attention to their surroundings.

 4 rugby balls
 18 Cones

Opening Activities:
2 Welcome/Overview: Meet in the center of
Minutes Good morning everyone! Today we will begin our unit on the gym
rugby! Our focus will be learning the proper way to the
pass the ball and creating space. We will develop our skills
in mini games! You should have checked your team
assignments posted outside the locker rooms! When I say
go Teams 1 & 2 go to Field 1. Teams 3 & 4 go to Field 2.
Teams 5 & 6 go to Field 3. Equipment Manager make sure
each field has a ball.
10 Warm-up Activity: Teams 1 & 2 Field 1
minutes 5 v 5 mini game. Students will play 5 on 5 game play.
Players can only take 3 steps after catching the ball. To Teams 3 & 4 Field 2
score the team on offense must cross the end line. One ball
per field. Teams with 6 players will sub every change of Teams 5 & 6 Field 3
possession. Teams will rotate after 5 minutes. When I say
go we will jog to the correct field Teams 1 & 3 on Field 1, Teams 1 & 3 Field 1
Teams 2 & 6 on Field 2, and Teams 4 & 5 on Field 3.

Lesson Focus:
4 Anticipatory Set: Meet in the center of

 We will not be tackling during our unit, but I
wanted you to see what real rugby looks like
 Today we will be learning to properly pass the ball
and to create space by stretching the defense and
using quick cuts.
 We will be encouraging and good teammates.
2 Instruction/Demonstration: Meet in the center of
Minutes Demonstrate the proper passing technique. Hold the ball the gym
with two hands with your chest facing forward. Draw the
ball across back across one hip, keeping your elbows
slightly bent, as you turn your chest away from your target.
Sweep the ball off your hip as you swing your hands
through an arc, keeping your elbows close to your body.
Follow through with your fingers pointing at your target.
10 Mini Game 1: Teams 1, 3, & 5 on
Minutes Circle Passing. Each team will line up in a circle with one the East Court
ball. When I say go each team will begin to pass the ball to
the right around the circle twice. After the ball has gone Teams 2, 4, & 6 on
around the circle twice the student who started with the ball the West Court
will then change the direction and pass the ball to the left.
Each team will then race each other passing the ball around Catchable passes are
