Course Syllabus

COURSE OBJECTIVES Durability assessment of materials can be defined as a systematic set of

procedures for compiling and examining the inputs and outputs of
materials with respect to time, and the associated environmental
impacts or burdens directly attributable to the their functioning. Stages
from the raw material quality, its production and processing, to its
transportation and distribution toward the customer will influence the
life cycle expectation of the final product. In this course, we will quickly
revisit the materials manufacturing techniques by emphasizing on the
process- structure-endurance relationship. Students will also be exposed
to the methodology and various case-examples of materials durability
testing. Upon completion of the course, the students will have developed
the capacity to quickly pinpoint and analyze the critical aspects in the
production of a product which can directly impact its life cycle
expectancy. The lecture material will be supplemented with laboratory
demonstrations and hands-on experiences wherever applicable.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
 All students are required to adhere to the University of Douala Code.
 Attendance in class and lab is mandatory. Students are entirely responsible for any material
covered in lectures they miss. Discussions on assignments and class notes are encouraged.
However, exchange of written information in completing the assignments is not permitted.
 Late assignment turn-ins will not be accepted except for delays due to serious illness or other
documented difficulties. Whenever possible, advanced request for extension is expected.
 No make-up exams will be given unless the student notifies the instructor in advance AND
provides an appropriate document supporting the legitimacy of absence on the scheduled
exam date.
 All course materials, assignments, and their solutions will be provided.
