Stanford How would factors such as your background, work and life experiences,

special interests, culture, socioeconomic status, race, or ethnicity contribute to the

entering class and hence to the experience of your Stanford classmates? Please
describe these factors and their relevance. (700 characters maximum)

Uminn -------------- The Graduate School embraces the University of Minnesota’s

position that promoting and supporting diversity among the student body is central to the
academic mission of the University. We define diversity to encompass many
characteristics including economic disadvantage, special talents, evidence of leadership
qualities, race or ethnicity, a strong work record, and disability. We invite you to provide
a statement regarding how you will contribute to diversity in the Graduate School.

Clarkson --------- Career Goals

What is your career goal with respect to the graduate program?

‘Research’ is the quest for truth and the desire to know. It is triggered by intuition
and creativity and is accomplished by hard work. ‘Engineering’ is the integration
of ingenuity and common sense to make impossible things probable. Through
graduate studies in Chemical Engineering I intend to bring a confluence of my
propensity towards research and my strong engineering fundamentals.

I desire to undergo the rigor and grind of research and emerge through as a
professional well equipped to productively utilize his technical skills either for R &
D or as a teaching member in the university. I believe that Clarkson University
would provide me just the right platform to fulfill my dreams. The Department is
vanguard in research in the ever-expanding field of Chemical Engineering. The
prospect of interaction with the students and the faculty members from various
disciplines and nationalities at Clarkson University will help me grow not only as
a better engineer but also as a better person. Its research facilities and its highly
distinguished faculty make Clarkson University one of the most highly rated
institutes. Given the opportunity, I am convinced that I can do justice to all posed
challenges. Also, the atmosphere of equality and freedom of thought, which
prevails in most American schools, would enable me to pursue my goals actively.
I am sure that, given any field, I can perform research of the highest quality and
contribute to the institute and the discipline in general.

Research Experience--------

The research work at Chemical Engineering Laboratory has fueled my interest for
graduate studies in Chemical Engineering. The Chemical Engineering Laboratory at
UICT is one of those very few laboratories in India, which provides undergraduate
students to work on experiments encompassing the whole of Chemical Engineering. I
had the opportunity to work on more than 60 experiments spanning over three semesters,
which have tested the my basic knowledge that I have gained in four years of study in
various chemical engineering subjects. The emphasis in the coursework has
always been on reasoning; why things do not always work the way we
think they ought to? . The Chemical Engineering Laboratory has been
a thought- provoking, at times painstaking, yet a thoroughly enjoyable
exercise. I have worked on various experiments of Mass Transfer, Heat Transfer, and
Momentum Transfer and reported my findings to the CE Lab in charge Dr. V.K. Rathod.
I have obtained an average of more than 80% marks in this course and have been
amongst the top 5 scorers in the exams conducted, which is a reflection of my problem
solving approach, a quality that is indispensable for a researcher.

Also, I had the opportunity to work on a project in Asian Paint India Limited, India’s
biggest decorative and automotive paint company. My project involved identifying the
reasons for Material and Energy Losses in the Paint House. We conducted in depth
search for a period of 1-½ months to identify the losses and suggested corrective
measures at various stages of paint manufacturing. Our suggestions were very much
appreciated by the Mr. Parag Bhargava, Head- Paint House.

Diversity ------------

“We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must
believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be
attained.”
These words of Madam Marie Curie, the eminent research scientist,
gaining two Nobel prizes in one lifetime have been my guide-light
throughout my academic career. With the same perseverance and
confidence, I am standing at a major milestone of my life. The qualities
of the subject of chemical engineering and my professional ambition to
pursue career in research have motivated me to apply for doctoral
studies in chemical engineering.

I desire to undergo the rigor and grind of research and emerge through
as a professional well equipped to productively utilize the technical
skills either for R & D or as a teaching member in the university. I
believe that Clarkson University in particular would provide me just the
right platform to fulfill my dreams. Its research facilities and its highly
distinguished faculty make Clarkson University one of the most highly
rated institutes. I am applying to the University as I am assured of
getting high quality training and experience. Also, the atmosphere of
equality and freedom of thought, which prevails in most American
schools, would enable me to pursue my goals actively. I am sure that,
given any field, I can perform research of the highest quality and
contribute to the institute and the discipline in general.

‘Engineering’ is all about creativity and creativity depends on our life experiences. This
makes diversity an absolute necessity in engineering.

I am proud to be born in India – the world’s largest democracy. With about 800
dialects, 15 official regional languages, several religions including Hinduism,
Christianity, Islam and Jainism, various types of lifestyles from the urban & rural
to the tribal India, is a melting point of cultural diversity.

My father being a Chemical Engineer & a Central government employee I had

the opportunity to get the complete flavor of India. Being on regular transfers I
had the opportunity to have an experience of tribal areas with anachronistic life
style to the sophisticated life of an urban jetsetter .I am fortunate to make friends
all over the country of different caste race and religion.

Basic laws of science have always fascinated me and I have always

tried to find reasons behind the things happening around. The quest
for education is also reflected in my excellent academic career
throughout since my school life. During the Secondary School
Certificate (S.S.C) examinations I secured 90% marks and stood 13 th in
Amravati Divisional Board amongst some 200,000 students. I realized
my aptitude for science and enrolled myself in the science stream for
higher secondary education. I repeated the feat with yet another
superlative performance in H.S.C. where I secured 98% marks in
Physics, Chemistry an Mathematics group. I was amongst the few
privileged (a total of a meager 22 students from throughout the
country) to be selected on the basis of All India Merit into University
Institute of Chemical Technology, UICT, Mumbai, India (formerly
known as UDCT), a pioneering institution for Chemical Engineering in
the country. . I have consistently been in the top 10% of my class and my six-
semester average of 74% marks gives a clear idea of my academic competency.

I strongly believe that academic proficiency should be accompanied by an overall

personality development. Knowledge acquired from theory is futile unless applied
practically. I have been a member of various organizing committees for both National
and International events. I was elected as the house Representative and Hygiene
Secretary of the New University Hostels during my undergraduate studies. Currently I am
serving as Student Coordinator of final year chemical engineering class. I have
participated actively in technical team competitions demanding creative designing
abilities, literature surveys, a strong commitment and most importantly good teamwork.

I desire to undergo the rigor and grind of research and emerge through as a
professional well equipped to productively utilize the technical skills either for
R & D or as a teaching member in the university. The atmosphere of equality and
freedom of thought, which prevails in most American schools, would enable me
to pursue my goals actively. I am sure that, given any field, I can perform
research of the highest quality and contribute to the institute and the discipline in
general.

On the ending note I would like you to know that, all these years I
have been trying to get scholarships to support myself financially. I
need financial backup as desperately as anybody else. I can see
finance as the only major stumbling block in achieving what I want
and in giving my country what it deserves for making me what I am
today. I look forward to your help in making me cross this barrier.
