The GRE General Test measures skills students acquire over a long period of time — skills
that influence a student's academic success. These skills, which are valued by business
schools, include:
verbal reasoning
quantitative reasoning
critical thinking
analytical writing
Similar to other graduate admissions exams, the GRE General Test contains questions
presented in a business context and does not presume advanced knowledge in any specific
content area, including business.
The test is offered in computer-based and paper-based formats through more than 1,000 test
centers in over 165 countries. The computer-based General Test is an adaptive test, providing
uniformly precise scoring of a test taker's abilities.
For information on GRE test content, review the GRE General Test content overview.
Who takes the test?
In 2007, more than 600,000 prospective graduate school applicants from roughly 230
countries took the GRE General Test. Applicants come from varying educational
backgrounds and countries, and the GRE Genenral Test provides the only common measure
for comparing their qualifications.
The GRE General Test is accepted at more than 3,100 accredited graduate, business and
professional schools, as well as departments and divisions within these schools.
Admissions and fellowship panels use GRE® scores to supplement undergraduate records
and other criteria for graduate study. Scores provide common measures for comparing
applicants' qualifications and evaluating grades and recommendations.
Compared to other leading graduate admissions assessments used by business schools, the
GRE General Test:
Provides access to a more diverse candidate pool — More than 600,000 people in
approximately 230 countries tested in 2007.
Measures the same skills that business schools value:
o Measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical
writing.
o Measures the same level of math content knowledge.
o Presents many questions in a business context.
o Does not presume advanced knowledge in any specific content area, including
business.
Is more widely used — Scores are sent to over 3,100 institutions worldwide, including
top MBA programs.
Is more widely accessible — The General Test is available in more cities and countries
around the world.
More affordable for test takers — The fee to take the General Test is significantly lower and
financial aid is available, which helps ensure that the cost of testing is not a potential barrier
to graduate study. Additionally, students who are undecided on a major, or who choose a
double-major, can take just one test — the GRE®.
Easy to implement — Many institutions already accept GRE® scores for their Master and
Doctoral programs, so becoming a score user is simple.
Measures essential skills — measures skills that faculty and deans have identified as
essential to graduate school success, including verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning,
critical thinking and analytical writing.
Provides common measures and comparative score data — provides measures of these
skills for comparing applicants' qualifications across different educational backgrounds,
countries of origin and intended major.
Furnishes independent information — provides an objective, reliable measure of student
skill levels to supplement the evaluation of grades and recommendations.
Is a valid predictor of performance — offers a valid prediction of graduate school
performance, as confirmed by a recent independent study using 82,000 graduate students
and more than 1,700 studies with validity data for GRE® tests. It also correlates positively
with degree attainment and research productivity.
Verbal Reasoning
analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it
analyze relationships among component parts of sentences
recognize relationships between words and concepts
Quantitative Reasoning
Analytical Writing
Verbal 30 30 minutes
Quantitative 28 45 minutes
* Unidentified unscored sections or questions may be included after the Analytical Writing
section or at the end of the test. These questions are included for research and development
purposes and are not counted as part of the test taker’s score.
** Unidentified unscored sections or questions may be included after the Analytical Writing
section or at the end of the test. These questions are included for research and development
purposes and are not counted as part of the test taker’s score.
Questions on computer-adaptive tests are customized for each test taker based on his/her
individual performance. The Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections of the computer-
based GRE General Test are dynamically generated based on a test taker’s answers to
previous questions.
This test design provides precise information about each candidate’s abilities using fewer test
questions than traditional paper-based tests.
At the start of the test, the test taker is presented with test questions of middle difficulty. As
he or she answers each question, the computer scores it and uses that information, as well as
his or her responses to preceding questions and information about the test design, to
determine the next question. As long as the test taker answers correctly, he or she will
typically be given questions of increased difficulty. When the test taker responds incorrectly,
he or she will typically be given less difficult questions.
Because the computer scores each question before selecting the next one, the test taker must
answer each question when it is presented. For this reason, once the test taker answers a
question and moves on to another, he or she cannot go back and change his or her answer.
The computer has already incorporated both the test taker’s answer and the requirements of
the test design into its selection of the next question.
Any section in which the test taker answers no questions at all is reported as a No Score (NS).

Don't miss this opportunity to hear from graduate schools that are searching for students like
you. The GRE Search Service matches prospective graduate students with participating
graduate schools and fellowship sponsors. If you match the recruitment profile of a
participating institution/organization, you may be sent information about graduate programs,
admission requirements, financial aid opportunities, fellowships, and other graduate
education opportunities.
You will be given the option to be included in the Search Service when you register for a
GRE test. Anyone considering graduate study, whether or not they are registered for a GRE
test, may also register for the GRE Search Service. To register for the GRE Search Service
only, use the online GRE registration form.
When you register for a GRE test, or if you participate in the Search Service, you will be
asked to provide background information about yourself. This information is collected for
analysis samples, score interpretation data, group statistics, and research studies. If you
register to participate in the Search Service, your background information, contact
information, and the broad score bands in which your test scores fall will be added to the
GRE Search Service database so that participating graduate schools and fellowship sponsors
can locate you.
Participating graduate schools and fellowship sponsors are now able to search the database on
broad GRE score bands in combination with undergraduate grade point average (UGPA). The
score bands for the Verbal measure, Quantitative measure, and the Subject Tests are 90 points
or greater (e.g., 600 to 690) and the score bands for the Analytical Writing measure are a half
point or greater (e.g., 4.5 to 5.0). Information on broad score bands or individual GRE
test scores will not be part of the output provided to Search Service users.
Information provided to participating schools about you may include any of the following:
Information collected by Educational Testing Service (ETS®) for use in the GRE Search
Service will be transferred to Hobsons®, a leading provider of educational solutions.
Hobsons is responsible for administering and marketing the GRE Search Service as directed
by ETS. By participating in the GRE Search Service, you authorize the transfer of your
personal information to Hobsons for the purposes described above. Hobsons is prohibited
from using your personal information for any other purposes.
Test takers who choose to participate in the Search Service and would like to unsubscribe at a
later date may do so at any time by contacting GRE Services at [email protected], or 1-609-
771-7670.
Important Things to Remember When Registering for the GRE General Test
It may be to your advantage to take the GRE® General Test more than once if you think that
the scores you obtained do not reflect your true abilities. If your scores seem unusually low
in comparison with other indicators of your preparedness for graduate studies, you may
want to consider taking the test again. Those considering repeating a test should be aware
that large score increases are unusual, and for some test takers scores will go down. Keep in
mind that score reports will include test results obtained within the past five-year period.
You may take the General Test (computer-based and/or paper-based) only once per
calendar month and no more than five times within any 12-month period. This applies even
if you canceled your scores on a test taken previously.
The General Test is given year-round at computer-based test centers in the U.S., Canada,
and many other countries.
Appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Taiwan
The GRE® General Test is offered in two parts in these regions. The Analytical Writing
section is offered on computer; the Verbal and Quantitative sections are offered at a paper-
based administration. Test takers are required to take both the computer-based and paper-
based parts of the GRE General Test in the same testing year, and must take the computer-
based Analytical Writing portion first. Two paper-based administrations will be offered.
Individuals taking the Analytical Writing section between July 1, 2008, and September 20,
2008, will be registered for the paper-based administration on October 25, 2008. Those taking
the Analytical Writing section between September 21, 2008, and May 2, 2009, will be
registered for the paper-based administration on June 6, 2009.
