1- A spherical vessel of ID: 0.3 m and thickness of 20 mm is made of steel with
conductivity of 40 W/mK. The vessel is insulated with two layers of 60 mm thickness of
conductivity 0.05 and 0.15 W/mK. The inside surface is at – 196°C. The outside is
exposed to air at 30°C with convection coefficient of 35 W/m2K. There is a contact
resistance of 1 × 10–3 m2°C/W between the two insulations. Determine the heat gain and
also the surface temperatures and the overall heat transfer coefficient based on the outside
surface area of the metallic vessel.
(Ans: 76.6 W, 0.932 W/m2 K., – 195.88°C, – 8.75°C.,)
2-A hollow sphere is constructed of aluminum (k=204 W/m.K) with an inner diameter of 4
cm and an outer diameter of 8 cm. The inside temperature is 100◦C and the outer
temperature is 50◦C. Calculate the heat transfer. Answ(5127 W)
4- A spherical container of negligible thickness holding a hot fluid at 140C and having an
outer diameter of 0.4 m is insulated with three layers of each 50 mm thick insulation of k1
= 0.02: k2 = 0.06 and k3 = 0.16 W/mK. (Starting from inside). The outside surface
temperature is 30C. Determine (i) the heat loss, and (ii) Interface temperatures of
insulating layers.
Answ(22W,54C,35C)
