INTRODUCTION:

In the current time, rape and sexual assault have become a harsh reality across all cultures. There
has been a drastic increase in the number of crimes against women with an incidence of 0.1 to 4.9
per 100,000 couples internationally, the rates in India being even worse. The statistics reflected by
the National Crime Records Bureau shows more than 24,000 cases of rape were registered in India in
2011 with latest estimates reporting a new case of rape every 22 minutes. But as per now with the
end of this decade it has come down to 6 minutes. The female body, the same which is worshipped
in India and in name of which people come down on roads for pulling down posters of films and
threaten to hurt media persons when they find something defamatory to their goddess or queen, in
the same country the real body is not being taken care of. Being violated is traumatizing physically,
emotionally and morally. To counter this issue on successful note we must acknowledge the impact
rape has on its victim, but equally and perhaps more important is to understand the psychology of
the offender which may help prevent such crimes against the female gender. Rape is defined as the
use of coercion or force or the threat of coercion or force to achieve penile-vaginal contact including
penile penetration of a woman without her consent. It has also frequently estimated that 67% - 80%
of rapes are not reported. It has also to do a lot with the way a culture is developed, be it strongly
patriarchal or maybe the workplace environment, because in case of sexual assault it does work
many a times by abuse of power and authority, that someone is forced into submission. Also at
times it has been related remotely to the crime of genocide when committed with the intent to
destroy, in whole, or in part, a targeted ethnic group. Hence, we need to look over our shoulders and
work on this issue as a collective because it is about leaving behind a better world.

CONCLUSION:

There is no person who after being subjected to severe trauma is immune to suffering and these
signs then gradually become symptoms. In the next stage these symptoms when grouped
together as a pattern over time, they change into a type of syndrome. There is a deliberate
malice in the very nature of rape, malice difficult or impossible for the victim to get through
with. It has also been observed that rape has not always been about lust but it is more about
power. It can be related to the want to conquer and control some other human body and
channel the anger and frustration one has been going through in the form of lust. The act of
rape leaves an impact as it ends up in terrorizing, dominating and humiliating the victims. We
should work on taking care of the culture we are nurturing because the seeds we sow today will
be the trees bearing the fruits of this very culture. Perhaps even in case of married couples the
orthodox sexual scripts which put forth the notion regarding intercourse that a man’s job is to
pursue the woman and the woman’s job is to set the limits. Even when she wants to, she should
resist and the man should pursue and pressurize the woman in submitting before him. This says
that “NO” means “YES” and this needs to be changed. Also schools should inculcate gender
sensitive education in their curriculum as a part of the ground work for the betterment. And
even villages should be enrolled as a part of this the same way there are legal aid camps there.
There needs to be a change children are brought up as in this age of internet, smartphones and
privacy even children have some access to adult content so they should be made aware of the
male and female body so that it does not hit them the wrong way. Instead of being raised with
strong patriarchal notions they should be taught to act in a gentle way and respect the human
body be it a male or a female one.
