Nexans Kabelmetal Nigeria Plc
History
Nexans Kabelmetal Nigeria Plc has been admired for its cable making expertise for almost 40
years. We have established ourselves as the leader and pioneer in the Nigerian cable market
because of our drive for excellence in quality of products and passion for innovation.
Founded by Kabelmetal, Hannover, Germany, the Company is now a subsidiary of Nexans
S.A Paris, which is the worldwide expert in the cable industry.
The Company has its manufacturing facility and head office located at Ikeja, Lagos and is the
largest manufacturer of power- and instrumentation cables in the West African sub region.
Benefitting from the parent company’s cable making expertise and from over 100 years local
manufacturing experience, our Company provides the nerves and sinews of the Nigerian
economy.
At the beginning of the 1980’s the development of cross linked polyethylene (XLPE) for low
voltage insulated cables opened the door to new market segments including the oil and gas
market. The introduction of airfield lighting cables and cables with enhanced fire performance
features over the following years further strengthened our product range and expanded our
customer base.
Nexans Kabelmetal Nigeria Plc was the first cable manufacturer in Nigeria, certified to ISO
9000 in the year 2000. We are also a Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) Diamond Award
winner. Our products conform to IEC standards, Nigerian Industrial Standards and other EU
standards.

Rated voltage Maximum Permissible Operating than the load current of the cable.
Uo/U Continuous Voltage Um The load current I, in Ampere is calculated as follow:
600/1000V 1200V
1800/3000V 3600V for single phase AC I = P x cos φ

As an example, for a cable to be installed in low voltage
three phase network with operating voltage of 415V, for DC I= P
selection should be made for a cable with rated voltage U
of 600/1000V (0.6/1kV) P
for three phase AC I= U x 1.732 x cos φ

Flame Retardant, Halogen Free, Low Smoke and Fire Resistant Cables
Practice has shown that a single PVC insulated and sheathed cable, even when laid in horizontal position,
does not propagate fire, i.e. it is flame retardant. But this is not guaranteed when several cables are
laid parallel or even bunched together and fire strikes. For that reason, test procedures have been developed
to determine and categorize fire behavior depending on the way cables are bunched together, how much
combustible material is contained and easily contributing to the fire as well as the method of
laying cables and the intensity of fire. Beside flame propagation, developing fumes and smoke have been examined
and test procedures were developed – and are still developed and fine tuned – to minimize danger for life and property
from cables engulfed in fire.
For offices, hospitals, airports etc. where large number of people are concentrated, fire performance of electric
cables must match security- and health safety measures.
In line with this, the following important parameters for cables have been established:
(A) LIMITED FLAME SPREAD characteristic: Flame propagation of bunched and/or parallel laid up cables are exposed
to burners for a period of time. After the burners are removed, affected portion of cables burnt shall not exceed a
specified length
(B) LOW CORROSIVITY OF FUMES generated during burning of cables: Insulation materials contain Halogens; for
example: PVC contains Chloride. Other Polymers contain Bromine and Fluor, which increase ignition temperature
and under influence of water or humid surroundings in fire situations, these corrosive gases change into acid (HCL)
which are dangerous to life. Therefore HALOGEN FREE materials and materials with LOW CONTENT of
HALOGENES were developed.
(C) SMOKE DENSITY: When PVC insulated/sheathed cables burn, thick black smoke develops. Smoke not only hinders
extinction of fire because it limits vision at the burning site but also complicates evacuation of people from affected
structures. Materials of LOW SMOKE DENSITY are preferred.
(D) Continued functionality of electric conductivity of the cable in case of fire. This parameter actually characterizes
FIRE RESISTANT cables. Fire resistant cable guaranty continuous functionality over a period of time under burning
condition.

Bending radius:
During the unreeling, the bending radius shall be at least, ‘’twice the static bending radius
(as specified in our technical data sheets)’’.
Pulling strength:
The pulling strengths applied directly to the copper or aluminum cores of the cables should
not exceed:
2
·5 daN/mm of cross section for copper conductors
·3 daN/mm2 of cross section for aluminium conductors
The pulling must be regular without shocking and continuously checked by a dynamometer
(especially when using a winch).
Cables unreeling:
The drum shall be settled on jacks by using a spindle through the central hole of the drum.
The unreeling speed shall be monitored at any moment
