5. Given that 2x/4y = 1 and 3 (√3)y = 9, obtain two linear equations in x

and y.

Hence determine the values of x and y. [4]

6. Express cos x + 2 sin x in the form Rcos (x – α), where R is a positive

constant and α an acute angle, giving the exact values fo R and tanα.
Hence solve the equation cos x + 2 sin x = 1.52 for 0º ≤ x ≤ 360º. [6]

Functions of f and g, each with domain 1R are defined as follows:

f: x  3x + 2, g : x  x2 + 1.

(i) State the range of f and of ‫ﻮ‬ [1]

(ii) Give a reason to show whether or not each function is one to

one. [2]

(iii) Find the values of x for which fg(x) = gf(x). [3]

8. The total cost of producing x radio sets per day is $(x2/4 + 35x + 25).
The selling price per set is $(50 – x/ 2).

(i) Find, in simplified form, an expression for the total profit per
day. [2]

(ii) Show that the maximum profit is achieved when x = 10. [2]

(iii) Show that he cost per set has a stationery value.

Find the value and determine whether it is a maximum or
minimum.

9. The position vectors fo the points A, B and C relative to a fixed origin

O are = 4i + 4j – 3k, b = 8i + 4j – 3k and c = 2i + 8j – 5k respectively.
find

(i) AB. [2]

(ii) the exact value of cos ABC, [3]

(iii) the exact area of triangle ABC. [3]

10. (a) A curve has parametric equations x = cos2θ; y = 2θ + sin 2θ.

Show that dy/dx = - cosθ. [4]

(b) Given that dy/dx = (tan x) √y, for 0 ≤ x/2, and y = 1 when x = 0,
find an expression for y in terms of x. [5]
11.

The diagram above shows a circle centre O and radius r, A and B are points
on the circumference. The arc AB subtends an angle of 2θ radians at O. the
tangents to the circle at A and B meet at T.

(i) Write down the area S of the sector AOB simplifying your answer. [2]

(ii) Show that the area D enclosed by the arc AB and the tangents to the
circle at A and B is given by D = r2 (tanθ – 0). [4]

(iii) Given that θ = 3∏/8 radians is an approximate solution of the equation

S = D; use the Newton-Raphson method once to obtain a second
approximation giving your answer correct to 3 decimal places. [4]

12. (a) Express 6– x in the form A + Bx + C where A, B

2
(2x + 1)(x + 3) 2x + 1 x2 + 3

and C are numerical constants to be found. [3]

Hence show that ∫10 6– x dx = 1n 3√3

2
(2x + 1)(x + 3) 2 [3]

(b) Use the trapezium rule with five ordinates to obtain an

approximate value of ∫ xx √sinθ dθ, giving your answer correct to
3 decimal places. [4]

13. (a) The line l1 has equation 4x + 3y – 6 = 0. the line l2 passes

through the point (0,3) and is perpendicular to l 1=.

(i) find the equation of l1 in the form y = mx + c. [2]

(ii) The line l1 crosses the x – axis at A and the y – axis at B.

find the coordinates of A and of B. hence determine the
area of triangle AOB, where O is the origin. [2]

(b) the variables x and y are believed to satisfy a relationship of the

form y = abx; where a and b are constants. The values obtained
in an experiment are shown in the table below.

x 1 2 3 4 5
