1. (a) Find the equation of the line that passes through the points (2, 1) and (6, 2).

Hence, form the quadratic equation, with integer coefficients, whose roots are
α 3 − α 2 and β 3 − β 2 .

3. A quadratic function is defined by f ( x) ≡ x 2 + 2 x + 9.

(a) Find the set of values of x for which f (x) > 12.
(b) Find the set of values of k for which f ( x) = k x has no real roots.
(c) By considering the identity x 2 + 2 x + 9 ≡ ( x + A) + B , where A and B are

(d) Hence, or otherwise, find the maximum value of 5 sin 2 x − 3 sin x cos x + cos 2 x .

6. A circle passes through the points (0, 2), (0, 9) and (3, 0).

(a) Find the equation of the circle and the length of its radius.
(b) Is the point (6, 0) inside, on the circumference of, or outside the circle? Give a

7. (a) Differentiate each of the following with respect to x, simplifying your answers:
