Reaction Paper on the article “WHAT WORKS IN VALUES EDUCATION”

Values education is mainly misconcepted here in our country where in if it was really
tried to be tought in schools. We had this subject of GMRC but this focused more on the
religious aspect of being a Catholic. Values was taught through memorization and was
never practiced at all, hence it made me read this article with such curiousity.
Ways on how to teach effective learning of Values education without any prejudice in
religion was given and since the article only focused on behavioral aspects alone it is very
promising as a practitioner and medium of teaching.
As for my knowledge about values education that were practiced in the world, I
envied Japan wherein children from nursery upto 3rd grade were not given and being
forced to take exams but to learn their culture which I am sure that made them also
learn what important values are; how to be morally and ethically upright.
As a practioner of teaching; I do agree that values education will always be important
as it is a part of underlying factor of a person. The best method for me that I would
agree upon would the peer activities, teachers are medium of knowledge and its better
for them to learn independently as long as we assist them on the process of learning.
Using peer activities will erase the awkward feeling given by the teacher and also will
give them confidence since it is their peer that they are with.
It also emphasized on the pedagogies the involvement of family in developing
character and values which really hits the mark, values is learned not only within the four
walls of the classroom but also to all of the factors which is always around the child. A
child will learn better if the parent knows how to show proper disclipline and also
mentor the learning child. I never imagined that teaching pedagogies will also be
effective in teaching values ed.
And I also like how the author mentioned teaching social and emotional
competencies as a factor in teaching value education. As a reality in our education in the
country we are having higher numbers of suicide rates each year by giving a thought
about values ed, I think this would help minimize or let the new generation realize that
suicide is wrong or such. To be able to overcome and to be emotional and social ready in
the world by teaching Values education.
It also spoke of professional development wherein it had a lot of methods wherein it
simple gave me the idea that values ed same as learning is a never ending cycle. As
humans, values together with learning is a no end process, hence we still are developing
it as days goes by inline with the culture that we consider as ethically right.

The last but the most important factor thst I had loved to learn was the high
expectation coming from the facility which is overlooked by the schools, observing
proper practice and expectations will be a factor for them to show and practice such
actions to develop their own social and mental being. Learning by practice, a manjor
factor imprinting of one's culture to other by using peer activities and also with the
guidance from mentoring and proper parenting.

Values Education is often overlooked but this is also as important in developing

morally and socially adept persons to live in harmony with each other and with correct
responses to each other. It is not knowledge that makes up a person but character.
