CRITICAL EVALUATION

MSc Nursing Programme offered by INC & AIIMS

INTRODUCTION:
Indian nursing council:
The Indian nursing council is an autonomous body under the government of India. Ministry
of health & family welfare was constituted by the central government under the section 3 (1)
of the Indian nursing council act, 1947 of parliament in order to establish a uniform standard
of training for nurses, midwives and health visitors.
AIIMS:
An Act of Parliament in 1956 established the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS,
New Delhi), as an autonomous institution of national importance and defined its objectives
and functions
PHILOSOPHY OF INC:
The Indian Nursing council presents the following statements of belief about Master’s
program in nursing; The master’s program in nursing is offered by institution of higher
education and is built upon a recognized bachelor’s curriculum in nursing. The Program
prepares for leadership positions in nursing and health fields who can function as specialist
Nurse practitioners, consultants, Educators, Administrators and investigators in a wide
variety of professional setting in meeting the national priorities and the changing needs of the
society.
The program prepares nursing graduates who are professionally equipped, creative, self
directed and socially motivated to effectively deal with day to day problems within the
existing constraints and thus act as an agent of social change.
The program encourages accountability and commitment to lifelong learning which fosters
improvement of quality of care.
PHILOSOPHY OF AIIMS:
National Health Policy(NHP) 2002 emphasizes the need to prepare nurses to function in
superspecialty areas who are required in tertiary care institutions, entrusting some limited
public health functions to nurses after providing adequate training, and increase the ratio of
degree holding vis a vis diploma holding nurses. It is observed that there is an acute shortage
of nursing faculty in under graduate and postgraduate nursing programme in India.
Postgraduate programme is essential to prepare nurses to improve the quality of nursing
education and practice in India. Postgraduate programme in nursing builds upon and extends
competence acquired at the graduate levels, emphasizes application of relevant theories into
nursing practice, education, administration and development of research skills.
The programme prepares nurses for leadership position in nursing and health fields who can
function as nurse specialists, consultants, educators, administrators and researchers in a wide
variety of professional settings in meeting the national priorities and the changing needs of
the society. This programme provides the basis for the post material programme in nursing.
Further the programme encourages accountability and commitment to lifelong learning which
fosters improvement of quality care.
REMARKS: AIIMS college of nursing believes and fulfils the philosophy as that of INC
and has developed its own philosophy also.
