Lesson Plan in Mathematics

Grade 10

I. Objectives
At the end of the topic, the students must have:
a. illustrated the following measures of position: quartiles;
b. calculated specified measures of position using quartiles;
c. solved problems involving measures of position; and
d. appreciated the people around them through the topic measures of position.

II. Subject Matter

a. Topic: Measures of Position: Quartiles
b. Concept: Quartiles is a measure of position where the data is
divided into four
c. References: Math Learners’ Module (Grade 10)

d. Materials: cartolina, laptop, television/overhead projector, whiteboard pen
e. Value Focus: Love

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity

Prayer Everybody please stand for the prayer. The students will pray.
(everybody will pray through the video
song)
Unfreezing Please remain standing because we will
dance. I will show a zumba dance on the
television, just follow the dance steps. (the students will dance)

Thank you very much. You may now

take a seat. I start a class with not just
preparing you physically, but also
mentally. So you try to perform this little
game I have. This game is called “say
the color not the word”.

I have here flashcards with words

written. I will flash a card and the only
instruction is to state the color of the
word written.
Yes.
You will answer altogether. Ready?

Motivation Happy Valentines!

Do you have date for today? How many

dates will you have today?

I know you’re all excited to get home.

However, let me be your date first. I
have here cut-out heart shapes in three
different sizes. Among your classmates,
to whom will you give your biggest heart
and your smallest heart? (the students will distribute the
hearts)
Who among you got the most number of
biggest hearts?
It just imply that you’re the most friendly
and lovable person here.

In every classroom we always have the

friendliest and liked by everybody. On
the other hand, we also have that most
hated classmate.

We have this we call our own best friend,

second friend and third, fourth, and so
on, like they are being ranked.

Presentation Let’s not talk about love. In your

classroom you have this ranking right? Yes.
The ones who outstands or who do their
best to perform best. With that, you are
given awards based on your
performance.

Our topic for today is somehow related

to ranking or positioning. How come
he/she comes first or last? So we arrange
them according to certain category.

Our topic is all about measures of

position.

Discussion You mister (pointing to one student) (The student will answer)
what is your ranking inside the
classroom in terms of academic?

Okay good. That is what we are looking

for as we solve for measure of position.

Measures of position can be solved

through quartile, decile or percentile.
And we are going to tackle first about
quartile.

Example
A group of students obtained the
following scores in their Math quiz: The students will try to have
some random answers.
8, 2, 5, 4, 8, 5, 7, 1, 3, 6, 9

First thing to do is to count all the

number of data, n=11

In quartile we divide the data into four.

Q1 as the lower quartile, Q 2as the middle
quartile and Q3as the upper quartile.
In getting the four main quartiles we
simply follow this formula.

n+1
Q 1=
4

n+1
Q 2=
2

3(n+ 1)
Q 3=
4

Next thing to do is to arrange the data in

ascending or descending order. You may
locate the lower, middle, and upper
quartile by following the order of the
result in formula.

Interquartile range can be solved through

subtracting the 3rd quartile value and 1st
quartile value.

Abstraction What are the three ways of measuring Quartile, decile or percentile
positions of the data?

How do we solve for the interquartile

value?

Application Now, let’s play a game. But first I will

group you into four by counting off.

We will call this game “arrange

yourself’’
Each group will form a line and arrange
yourself according to the category that I
will provide. After that I will look for
either Q 1 ,Q 2 ,∨Q 3 by raising the flaglet
that I will give to you.
Yes.
Ready?

Valuing In a one half lengthwise you write

numbers one to ten. I will provide names
to be seen in the flash cards. Write down
where you will write the name. On the
number one if the person is very close to
you or to the number ten as not so.

Okay. Seems like everybody really think

well about the ranking of those person.
What is the most important is that there
is erasure in your every lengthwise that
would mean you really had a hard time
choosing who comes more important to
you, and you cannot rank them because
all of them are very vital for your
success and happiness.

That’s what real love is. You never rank

and you never choose whom you just
love. Because love is immeasurable and
selfless.

IV. Evaluation Using the same groupings at the game.

We will have a quiz bee. The score of the Answer key
group will be the score to be recorded
individually.
