Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

This module was collaboratively compiled, repackaged and
reviewed by the educators of the Department of Education Schools
Division of the City of Batac to assist learners and teachers or facilitators
meet the standards of the K to 12 Curriculum amidst this difficult situation.
Particularly, this module hopes to engage the learners into guided
and independent fun-filled learning activities at their own pace and time.
Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st
century skills and the four livelihood skills for survival – (agtagibalay,
agtaraken, agmula, agliwliwa) which are considered very vital in surviving
any crisis.
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to
use this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress
while allowing them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are
expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks
included in the module.
For the learner:
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource
while being an active learner.
The following are some reminders in using this module:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any
part of the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the
exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other
activities included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your
answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. You are given 5 days or 1 week to finish this module.
7. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through
with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do
not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that
you are not alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful
learning and gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You
can do it!
What I Need to Know

Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. A useful way to start
thinking about matter is to think about the different materials, or substances, that it can
be made into.

These materials make up the objects around us, and each of these materials
has different properties or characteristics that can be observed or tested. Scientists,
technologists and engineers investigate these materials – they experiment with them,
compare their properties and relate the results to possible uses.

In this lesson, you will be able to:

1. identify properties of materials and their uses; and
2. classify properties of materials as to their uses.

Materials

What Is It
The term material also refers to the substances from which a product is
made. Manufacturers are familiar with the properties of the materials they use. Below
are some simple properties of materials found in products we use at home and their
uses.
Materials Properties Products/Uses
Metals Conductors, strong, malleable, Metal pots, pans, electrical wires,
and magnetic properties bag locks, refrigerator magnetic
holders
Glass Transparency Windowpanes, bottles, vehicle
windows, and light bulbs
Ceramics Insulators and highly durable Cover the entire exterior of space
shuttle, vases, figurines, cups, and
mugs.
Plastics Heat insulation, durable, Styrofoam, car parts, synthetic
lightweight, corrosion resistant, fibers, toys, and nylon
and water proof
Rubber Flexible, elasticity, and electrical Belts, hoses, gaskets, shoes,
resistance slippers, clothing, furniture, and
toys
wood Versatile, heat and electrical Chairs, tables, cooking wares, and
resistance furniture

44
Below are the list of properties of materials and their meaning:
brittleness The ability of the materials to break easily.
density The ratio of a material’s mass to it’s volume.
ductility The ability of the material to be drawn into fine wires without
breaking.
elasticity The ability of the material to be stretched or pulled, and return to
its original size and shape.
hardness Property of matter to resist scratching.
malleability The ability of a material to be hammered or shaped into thin
sheets.
solubility Maximum amount of solute that will dissolve in a given amount of
solvent at a specified temperature.
viscosity The ability of liquids to resist flowing.
waterproof Water resistant
opaque blocking the passage of radiant energy and especially light
smooth free from projections or unevenness of surface
absorbent able to take liquid in through the surface and to hold it

Household materials are made of different substances. These substances have

their distinct properties that make the materials useful and serve their purpose.
However, when these materials are not used properly, they may cause some harm
too.
