Analysis of Meaning and Relevance of History from the Millennial Point of View
As a result of living in this world as a student for the past 14 years, the subjects I have
taken in my lower school years have found their ways to leave an impression on me. English is
about rules, mathematics is about formulas, science is about everything that exists and, history, is
about memorizing past events. Being a competitive student means you must get A’s in
everything you do so you end up memorizing every single detail that might appear in every quiz
or test your teacher will conduct, and that, will basically become one of their bases in computing
your grades. Basically, I grew up with this learning method and that can be ineffective most of
the times for the reason that it will most likely result in me forgetting the details I have
memorized.
The text I have read in the introduction to history have mentioned this method, it was also
mentioned that it is a “wrong connotation”. The whole text indeed proved that history isn’t just a
subject that needs a lot of memorization; it is a subject that has its own broad meaning and
relevance to one’s study and life. Let me tell elaborate what information that were provided in
the introduction that totally help me to understand this specific subject.
According to the text, history is sequentially narrated and talks about the past of mankind.
And then, later, in classical Latin, history acquired a new meaning which is; a statement of past
events of one’s individual or group of people by the use of written documents and historical
evidences. Lives of important individuals were documented and preserved and so are important
events that occurred like wars and revolution. The evidences that were provided by the historians
and undeniable marks of the past helps the present and will help the future to understand one’s
current situation and practices.
The documents can be one’s guide in his or her life. The lives of influential individuals
surely have some events that one will inevitably encounter in her or his own life. Through this
documented tragedy or event, it will surely give individuals of the present or future some ideas
what to actually do in the said situation; if they ever find their selves in the same shoes that the
influencers once were. Influencers got their own wisdom that can be truly helpful in every one of
us.
History can also help us from avoiding doing mistakes again for the second time around.
As the lessons from the past events will keep us from doing the wrong things; if we choose to
learn from the lessons we had from the pasts.
This subject, history, just proves that everything that exists, will exist and has existed has
their own story. It was mentioned in the text that history gives power to an individual to
understand one’s origin, whether it’s an origin of a song, ritual, one’s clothing, values, culture,
dance etc. One’s curiosity can be answered right away through the help of history.
History does a lot of help in our lives. It isn’t just a subject that requires us to memorize
ton of things, instead, it helps us understand and scrutinize an event that will surely bring a
benefit to us; a lesson. One of the famous quotes of Karl Marx, a well-known historian, was
“History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.” I believe that this line relates to some
part of the text I have read. In order to avoid the past having its own parody in the present nor
future, we must draw a conclusion from the occurrence in the past time and take it as a lesson.
The importance that I can see in this subject is; you can learn from one’s experiences without
having to get through what they got through.
Mainly, the text informs the readers that the past and present is wholly connected to each
other. Without past, there wouldn’t be any present and future. So, as a student that lives in
present, I have the right to know the things that help me to stand where I stand. Knowing the past
events of my own country gives me a realization that if the past didn’t occur at all, I wouldn’t
have any chance to breathe and enjoy the environment I am currently living. The past influencers
have done their part for this generation. The least thing this generation can do is recognize the
valiant effort other people made in the past to give us what we deserve. History will always be a
part of our lives, it should be recognized.
