Ratio and Proportion

1) A photograph is enlarged in the ratio 3:5. If the original photo was 7.2cm high, how high is the
enlarged photo?

2) A jug of drink consists of wine and fruit juice in the ratio 2:5. If there are 3.5 litres of drink in the jug,
how much of this is wine?

3) A map has a scale of 1:25000. Two landmarks are 8.2km apart on the ground. How far are they apart
on the map?

4) Another jug of drink consists of wine and fruit juice in the ratio 3:8. If there are 3.2 litres of fruit juice
in the jug, how much wine is there?

4) (a) Simplify the ratio


(b) Write the ratio 8:75 in the form 1:x (where x is a decimal number).

Ratio: Direct proportion

1) A football pitch is 108m long and 72m wide. Write the ratio of its length to its width in its simplest form.

2) The distance from the earth to the sun is approximately 150 million km, and to the moon is approximately
400,000km. Write the ratio of these distances in the form k:1.

3) The distance from A to B on a map is 3.5cm. On the ground it is 7km.


Find the ratio "distance on map : distance on ground" in its simplest form.

4) Write each of the following ratios: (i) in its simplest form using whole numbers (ii) in the form k:1 (iii) in the
form 1:k
(a) 240:600 (b) 1km:4cm (c) 1.2:0.45

5) Some material is advertised at £8.50 for 5 metres.


(a) If I need 8 metres, how much will it cost? (b) How many metres can I buy for £50?

6) A car travels 456km on 48 litres of petrol.

10) The ratio of the weight of a small tin of beans to a large tin is 3:5.
(a) If the small tin weighs 240g, how much does the large tin weigh?
(b) If the large tin weighs 650g, how much does the small tin weigh?
(c) Express the weight of the small tin as a percentage of the weight of the large tin.

(i) How much would a plank of the same wood 320cm long weigh?

(b) My car travels 64km on 5 litres of petrol.


(i) How far would it travel on 7 litres?
(ii) How many litres would it use on a journey of 160km?

(c) A concrete mixture contains gravel and sand in the ratio 3:5. What
mass of gravel is there is a 40kg sack of the mixture?

2) A team of 12 painters can paint the Humber Bridge in 20 days.


(a) How long would it take 1 painter?
(b) How long would it take 16 painters?
(c) If the job is to be completed in 15 days, how many painters are
required?

3) My map of Oxfordshire has a scale of 1:25000.


(i) If the distance from Islip to Beckley is 18cm on the map, what is
the actual distance in km?
(ii) If the distance from Eynsham to Woodstock is 7.5 km, how far
will the distance be on the map?
(iii) The map measures 40cm by 80cm. What area of ground does
the map cover?

4) The rate of exchange between sterling and euros is 1 euro to £0.67.


(a) How many Euros could I get in exchange for £75 ?
(b) How many pounds could I get in exchange for 80 Euros?

Ratio: Inverse proportion

1) A farmer estimates that 45 fruit pickers can pick all the strawberries in a field in 28 days.
(a) How long would it take with 21 pickers?
(b) How many workers would be needed to clear the field in 10 days?

2) One sack of chicken food is enough to feed 500 chickens for 12 days.
(a) How long would it last if there are 240 chickens?
(b) If a sack lasts 40 days, how many chickens are there?

3) A building contractor estimates that it will take 18 days to build a wall round a park, with 20 men working on it.
(a) How long will it take if there are 45 men working on it?
(b) How many men are needed to complete the wall in 4 days?

4) It takes a 16-speed CD-Rom drive 105 seconds to transfer a certain file.


(a) How long would it take with a 12-speed CD-Rom drive?
(b) What speed drive would be needed to transfer the file in 1 minute?

5) In a certain circuit, a wire with a resistance of 120 ohms allows a current of 21 milliamps.
(a) What would the current be if the resistance were 70 ohms?
(b) What should the resistance be if the required current is 40 milliamps?
