1 Simplifying Algebraic Expressions
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify algebraic expressions, terms, like terms, and unlike terms.
2. Combine like terms.
3. Use the distributive property to remove parentheses.
4. Write word phrases as algebraic expressions.
A. Identify algebraic expressions, terms, like terms, and unlike terms
Algebraic Expression‐is a collection of numbers, variables operation symbols and grouping symbols.
Term‐is a number or the product of a number and variables raised to powers.
Numerical Coefficient‐is the numerical factor.
Like Terms‐terms with the same variables raised to exactly the same powers.
Example 1. Identify the numerical coefficient in each term.
z
1. − 5 x 2. 2x 2 3. − y 4.
3
Example 2. Determine whether the terms are like or unlike.
1. 7 x, − 6 x 2. 3x 2 y 2 , − y 2 x 2 , 2 xy 3. − 5ab, 3ba
B. Combine like terms
Combining like Terms‐is to add the numerical coefficients of the like terms.
Example 3. Simplify each expression by combining like terms.
1. − 7a − 2 − a + 5
2. 5 y − 3x + 6 x − 7 y
3. Add 3 y − 5 to y + 16
4. Subtract 4 x − 7 from 12 + x
1
C. Using the Distributive Property to remove parentheses
Distributive Property: a (b + c ) = ab + ac and − a (b + c ) = − ab − ac
Example 4. Simplify.
1. − 3( y + 6)
2. − (3x + 2 y + z − 1)
3.
1
(9 x − 6) − (x − 2)

D. Writing Word Phrases as Algebraic Expressions
Key Words:
Sum Difference Multiply Divide
Increased by Subtracted by Product Divided by
Total Subtract Times Quotient
Plus minus
Example 5. Write each phrase as an algebraic expression and simplify if possible. Let x represents
the unknown number.
1. The difference of a number and two, divided by five.
2. Eight more than triple a number.
3. The sum of 3 times a number and 10, subtracted from 9 times the number.
4. Half a number, minus the product of the number and eight.
