RADIO WAVES
Course, Yr., Sec: BSED SCIENCE 3-B2 Instructor: Mrs. Juanita Z. Sayson
I. Objectives
II. Materials
9 battery
1 peso coin
Portable radio
III. Procedures
2. Then you find an AM radio and tune to a frequency where you can hear static.
4. Quickly tap the coin into the two terminal sides of the battery
5. Stroke the coin into the both endpoints of the battery near the radio antenna
IV. Observations
The video simulation about the radio waves with the use AM radio, coin and a battery shows
how waves being transmitted. As the AM radio tuned into a frequency wherein you can hear a
static sound and a coin was being rubbed in both terminal side of a battery being placed near
the antenna, you will hear a crackle sound on the radio or a noise from being static to a moving
soundlike it was crashing inside the radio.
V. Answers to Questions
A coin is made of conducting material which will, in general, short out any build up of static
electricity. So when the coin was stroke on the battery there will no charge can accumulate on
the coin instead it will instantly carried away and foster any other medium.
It was not shown on the simulation video but for me, the changing position affects the results
depending on the level of disruption on the antenna. The buzz or the noise is dependent on the
level where the battery and the coin being place during stroking. Definitely, when the rubbing is
being placed near the antenna then there will be so much noise rather than it is beng done far
away because the electric charge being thrown away in the metal which is the coin will directly
disrupt the wave that will enter into the AM radio when it is in the near position. You can hear
static or a buzzing sound as you get close to the source of the interference. The closer you get,
the more intense the static will be.
What might be the cause of hearing static sound in our radio sets? How can this be fixed?
Hearing static sound on radio occurs when unwanted radio frequency signals disrupt the use of
your television, radio or cordless telephone. Interference may be be caused for this preventing
reception altogether, causes a temporary loss of a signal, or may affect the quality of the sound
or picture produced by your equipment. The two most common causes of interference are
transmitters and electrical equipment.
Possibly this would be fixed by locating the interference, find out possible reason especially if
there will be electrical equipment or transmitters placed near the antenna that may affect the
receiving of the signal sound.
VI. Conclusion
Therefore, radio waves have the longest wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum as being
emphasized in the simulation video when sound is being produced. When waves created from
the signal transmitter were picked up by the receiving antenna, and enter into the system of
the radio. The radio "receives" these electromagnetic radio waves and converts them to
mechanical vibrations in the speaker to create the sound waves you can hear. When the
electromagnetic radio waves hit a receiving antenna, or receiver, such as a radio, it generates a
current inside of a wire in the receiver. (The reverse process of what happened in the
transmitter when the current generated the electromagnetic field in the first place.) The
receiver then processes the current back into the transmitted information, which, for a radio,
allows you to hear music or other broadcasts. Some materials can block the radio waves that
the transmitter generates, and somehow it includes metals which hinder signals to transmit for
example the coin when being rubbed in the terminal side of the battery that produces its own
electric charge which causes the noise in the AM radio. This could be tested by seeing whether
a receiver can process and respond to information sent by a transmitter and for the
interference effect of some electromagnetic field.
In addition, this experiment introduces to the concept of electromagnetic sheilding with how
the stroke of a coin in a battery affect the static sound of the AM radio. Electromagnetic
shielding involve in reducing the electromagnetic field in a space by blocking the field with
barriers made of conductive or magnetic materials. Electromagnetic shielding that blocks radio
frequencies and electromagnetic radiation is also known as RF shielding. The shielding can
reduce the coupling of radio waves, electromagnetic fields and electrostatic. A conductive
enclosure used to block electrostatic fields is also known as a Faraday cage.

VIII. Reaction
While watching the video even with just a minute it gives much understanding on how radio
waves works and on how noise being created once it is being tuned in. And also it shows how
electromagnetic field being disrupted by any metal or with charged electric field by creating a
crackled noise once it is being placed near the radio antenna. Somehow it gives me an idea on
how radio waves being created and disturb by the barriers that blocks the trasmission of signals
into the radio. Waves or signals created in this type of electromagnetic waves doesn't requires
medium to travel or pass through but a certain medium affects the transmission of signals that
results to sound varies.
