Let’s Check

Activity 1. (15 PTS) Please read carefully the following

statement written by Martha Jean Sanchez from her book
titled MediaIndustry

“Traditional media publication that of print media is slowly if

not entirely challenged by digital media in the modern
landscape of the media market. Although digital publishing
is trending worldwide, the manufacturing value- added of
the publishing and printing industry in the Philippines has
overall increased since 2009 and was valued at
approximately 19.5 billion Philippine pesos in 2017.”

Briefly explain why print publication has been challenged by

digital media? How will it survive in the digital era? Please
include at least 2 internet references (should be published
from 2016 and above) using APA, 6TH Edition citationformat.

The print publication has been challenged by digital media

due to the fact that people or audiences are relying on social
media outlets. It's convenient, less-budget through the use of
new technologies such as smartphones that can be bought at
one time. As stated by Locsin (2019) for the disadvantages of
the print medium of information, these are some of the
disadvantages: the dullness and the distribution. Print media
cannot capture the sound and movement required by an
audience raised on the audio and video of television and the
internet. Moreover, print can only reach its audience when it
is distributed through an infrastructure that requires vehicles
and people, which costs money.

However, print media can really survive and will continue

amidst the continuous flow of the digital era. It is through
precise information has been delivered and due to the
certainty that print media has the best source that audiences
can lean on. As published by Klein (2017), one of the benefits
or advantages of print media over digital media is, the
credibility increases reader loyalty. Print publications are
better able to increase reader loyalty because they are
credible. Many people subscribe to magazines and
newspapers because they understand and believe that the
information provided to them is credible and accurate.
Publishing an article in print takes a lot more effort than
publishing something online. This is because you only have
one chance to get every word and image right before it gets
published. With online ads, you can go back in to change or
tweak your ad and send it back out. Since there is this
pressure on accuracy and credibility and print media, readers
are more likely to trust this platform. This works to your
advantage by generating leads and sales much easier. As an
added benefit, this trustworthiness leads to better reader
loyalty.

Hence, digital media can never replace how the printing

industry works as it contributes and provides a good outlet in
media economics. Printed is more reliable and sensible which
can give a broader understanding of the readers, and has
better services. Furthermore, print publications can survive
and will remain of the never-ending periods of digital.

Let’s Analyze

Activity 2. (20 PTS) It has long been a complaint against

western transnational media companies that wherever they
go, they devour the local cultural industry and overwhelm
the other countries with their cultural products. Here the
cultural products mean films, TV, music, theatre, drama,
literature, art, craft and so on. (Devrari,2013)

Examine the following controversial tweet of Erik Matti on local

movies and TV shows are ‘doomed’ because of K-drama hype:

Do you disagree/agree with the Matti’s sentiments towards

K- drama hype? If this affects our cultural industry, what are
the solutions or reinforcements would you recommend to
improve our local TV and movie industry?

The topic is about the sinking of the cultural industry in

the Philippines. I somehow agree with Matti's sentiments. As
it all know, media entertainment platforms such as film and
through its music has provided a massive amount of impact
on tourism and promoting festivals of the Philippines. Matti's
main point is about supporting our own local entertainment
and globalize our own, as we belong to the Global South or
Third World. Furthermore, about ‘#Netflix’, as I remembered
about the last year's symposium of FDCP Film School and one
of the speakers was the Vatican director, Raymond Red. He
mentioned about Netflix will be the cause of alterations to
watching movies and teleseryes. Television and Cinema
establishments will be neglected due to the fact that
watching Netflix is through the social media platform because
it is less-hassle, people can use their smartphones, laptops,
or computers with a network connection of the way they
preferred such as lying on their bed or sitting on their
couches. However, about the ‘belofied actors whiter than
white’ which means undergone plastic surgery and injecting
glutathione really promotes racial inequality even they are K-
drama movies that promoted equality of black and white.
Still, their real actions are contrasted by their acting.

However, the solutions or reinforcements that I

recommend to improve our local TV and movie industry are
the support of the government through the aspects of
technicality and helping it through funds. The government
should invest in the media industry by helping it with the
advancement of technologies. As well as, producers that
should support a local film and teleserye with substance, and
not just about the money that can benefit from themselves.
Moreover, Filipino youth should support their own and study
their own culture by watching it, in the form of television and
movies in the Philippines.

In a Nutshell

Activity 3. (5 PTS EACH) Based from the facts, events and the
learning exercises that you have done, please feel free to
type your arguments or lessons learned below.

1. On Communication Media as BusinessEnterprise

Communication Media as Business Enterprise can provide a better
economy for the Philippines. Through the advertisements provided
by other businesses through the use of outlets of television, radio,
or print publishing. As well as, digital media through the use of the
internet like social media platforms. However, as it knows that
Business Enterprise is done through advertisements, the
disadvantages through digital media are audiences or consumers
can easily click out the advertisements, for instance, watching
YouTube then ads pop up, then the ads can skip in 5 seconds then
the duration of is more than 5 seconds. Expectedly, audiences did
not watch the commercials. Furthermore, printed form such as
newspaper is a hassle because it provides vehicles and not all
audiences can receive a newspaper nowadays.

2. On Ownership Structures andSystems

On Ownership Structures and Systems means a pattern and network

owned by private and public. Private Ownership, the government is
not included. It includes individual or private organizations which
means it runs by them while Public Ownership involves government
because from the word ‘public’ is about tackling the issues, the
happenings in the government, and the nation. It means as well
about the convergence of private and government media.

3. On Transnational of Media Ownership and Control

On Transnational of Media Ownership and Control means

the media is dependent on the other media or multiple media
which means interdependence. Through interdependence,
they will be great globalization that will occur. The
Transnational Media provide a better economy as it
encompasses a sameness of development goals which is the
media economics. Through this control, it can provide
interaction to those fellow Filipinos abroad. They will be
updated, as television channels provide more credibility and it
is accurate for spreading information about the happenings in
the Philippines.
