Meetings at 7AM on Thurs at Coronado Yacht Club
Stu Powell, Secretary
Well now. Wasn’t that a fine meeting? We had all those sweet people over from John Freeman, Treas.
the Bonita Club who said nice things about us and didn’t mention the food. We had USNA ’45 Publishers
a new member-to-be win $100. We had a report from our Pacific Northwest A group that’s too noble
detachment on what life looks life from Hurricane Ridge. for fear

But first we had to get by president who was wearing a shirt that one man said
“looked like an explosion in the paint locker”. Zeke Zaludek told us that he was giving us the “short prayer”
because he was losing his voice. And Gayle Askren gave us the full pledge.

Tickets for the drawing were in great demand. We had two drawings—the first for $52 and the second for a C
note. Rich Thomas took home the first prize, and Renee Cavanaugh (who stepped in front of me to buy her
ticket) got $100. Renee had just paid her dues as a new member, so I guess it was meant to be.

I told you we had a bunch of guests. Governor Ron Foster led the group from Bonita. Bert and Lucille LeMieux
joined him. They thanked us for our welcome and told us why they like to come to our little corner of the world.
Bert has been the governor and now he has talked his wife Lucille into tossing her bonnet into the ring. Lucille
is a longtime member who has devoted much effort to children as a teacher all the way from the elementary to
college level. She will bring a lot of energy and experience to the job of governor. Do I overstep my limits by
urging a vote for Lucille?

John Watson came as the guest of Rich McCampbell. Rich told us that John came for the singing.

Jim Alley read a report of the meeting on Mount Olympus attended by Jack Couture and Tom Meadows. Tom
was on hand to testify to us that Dungeness crab is better than our sticky buns.

Art Jones put in a plug for the Main Street Garden Party on September 6. The food will be supplied by many of
our local eateries and so it should be very good. The details are on page three of the Eagle Journal this week.
If you need tickets give Art a phone call.

While you are reading your Eagle Journal take a look at the follow up article on our Sports Fiesta on page 7.
Joe Ochoa was responsible for this write up and it is a winner just like our first place finishers. Joe stresses
legacy and the family and community nature of the event. It makes one proud to be one with all those
Optimists who carried the Sports Fiesta on since all the way back in 1972. We are on board with the effort to
make Coronado America’s fittest city. Let’s see more bikes at the meeting. And thank you, Joe.

We got to sign up for the Dog Days at the Cays. This will be on Sunday, 7 September, and if you missed the
signup sheet I am certain that Jack Larison will reserve you a spot if you call him. Jack has a morning or an
afternoon shift available for you.

Your next opportunity was to ride on a boat. John Porter said that collectively we were looking a little peaked
and in need of a day on the water. He passed around a sheet where you could show you interest in a morning
or afternoon outing with or without fishing. If you missed this chance for something different give John a call at
home (435-6978) to make a choice.

Your board of directors met over beer and cookies to vote in Renee Cavanaugh and Dave Wilcox as members.
They also worked over a long anticipated proposal for a Coronado Optimist Foundation that would have some
tax benefits to members who might donate to the cause. We will be hearing more about this soon.

Gil Gilliland told us how to behave if your next door neighbor has a fire at 3AM. Lesson number one—wear
pajamas to bed. We also sang HBTY to Gil, Gayle Askren, and Stu Powell.

Lety Buil McCarty is the president of the JOOI club. We helped Lety to get to Orlando for the Junior Optimist
Convention, and she came back to tell us how it went. She had a nice power point program that worked
without all the pictures that she had imbedded. But we saw enough of the photos to know that the energy of
these young people will carry the program on to higher levels of participation.

Lety told us that she will be working with a teacher at Sacred Heart Parish School to start a club there.

Next week Fred Eckert, Director Marketing, Chicago Title, "San Diego County Real Estate Issues
and Challenges in 2008" Bring a friend.
