I was thinking as a future educator, how can I enfranchise my students’ voices for
school improvement? Students are not typically involved in efforts to make schools
I know schools need to have rules in place for them to be safe, respectful and
responsible places for children to be, but I think schools can do a better job of listening
to their students, valuing their opinions and giving them something they ask, as long as
For example, it was my freshman year of high school around homecoming time.
We got to dress up in different costumes every day of the week, but because we had
say while everybody did look super nice, the teachers complained that the girls wore too
short of dresses. Just because some girls wore too short of dresses and teachers
homecoming week of that year. This is an example of not giving students what they
want because girls made one wrong bad choice by wearing too short of dresses and
ruined it for everyone all the years to come. They have never changed their minds back
to having this day, even though multiple people have asked and told them we would be
responsible about the length of our dress. We can’t get everything we want as students
in school.
“Students have valuable knowledge about their lives, social contexts and
schools. When educators make more time to listen and involve students in the process
of making schools better places, then more progress can be made in making schools
safe places for exceptional learning, and more empowering environments for students.”
This is amazing!
