Crodasinic HT

New sodium hypochlorite bleach thickener

Crodasinic HT is a new product designed to effectively thicken sodium hypochlorite bleach solutions.

Thickened sodium hypochlorite bleach products

Thickened sodium hypochlorite bleach solutions are widely used as the basis for a number of household
products for their dual cleaning and disinfectant properties. The recent growth in popularity of disinfectants and
antimicrobial cleaners has stemmed from increased consumer concern over germs in the home.

Crodasinic HT facilitates the easy preparation of sodium hypochlorite bleach solutions which demonstrate a
pseudoplastic (shear thinning) flow behaviour. This type of flow behaviour (rheology) allows ease of application
with the advantage of being able to adhere more readily, and for longer periods, to vertical and inclined
surfaces. Cleaning performance and disinfecting properties are therefore improved due to increased contact
time. The viscosity minimises accidental splashing during application and use, and enhances consumer
perceptions of quality and cleaning effectiveness.

Thickened sodium hypochlorite bleach products include

ƒ Lavatory bowl cleaners
ƒ Drain and wastepipe cleaners/unblockers
ƒ Household cleaning products for cleaning and disinfecting various hard surfaces such as
ƒ baths, sinks and work surfaces
ƒ Laundry products which can be diluted for cold bleaching and stain removal

Benefits of Crodasinic HT
ƒ Single product required to effectively thicken sodium hypochlorite bleach solutions
ƒ Pseudoplastic viscosity profile maintained during storage at ambient temperatures
ƒ Minimal effect on available chlorine levels compared to controls during storage
ƒ Easily incorporated into formulations containing sodium hypochlorite bleach
ƒ Easy to handle liquid
ƒ Improved cleaning performance
ƒ Enhanced foaming characteristics
ƒ Increased surface wetting
ƒ Fragrance solubilisation
ƒ Readily biodegradable as defined in Directive 93/21/EEC test OECD301E
ƒ Components listed on the Japanese (MITI), US (TSCA) & European (EINECS) chemical inventories

Formulating
Crodasinic HT is easily formulated into sodium hypochlorite bleach solutions of various concentrations. By
simply stirring Crodasinic HT into sodium hypochlorite bleach solutions a desired viscosity can be obtained.
Example development formulations together with stability data in the form of viscosity profiles and available
chlorine levels are detailed overleaf.

The viscosity profiles were determined using a Brookfield RV Programmable Viscometer, model DV – III
(spindle SC – 21) and the available chlorine levels were determined by titrating liberated iodine with sodium
thiosulphate solution.

Crodasinic HT - maintaining the viscosity of sodium hypochlorite bleach solutions
Formulation BC21 (5% available chlorine) shown below has a pseudoplastic viscosity profile, which is
maintained during storage. The viscosity drops slightly after manufacture to a similar level to that of a leading
market product. Thereafter the profile is maintained following six weeks storage at 25oC and 40oC. No changes
in appearance were observed. The viscosity profiles are shown in figure 1 below and demonstrate the excellent
long term stability of Crodasinic HT in sodium hypochlorite bleach solutions. The viscosity profile of the leading
market product is shown for comparison. The market product was not stable to storage at 40oC.

Crodasinic HT - maintaining the stability of sodium hypochlorite bleach solutions

Crodasinic HT does not promote degradation of sodium hypochlorite bleach solutions during storage. This is
clearly demonstrated by the comparatively small change in the available chlorine levels of formulation BC21
during six weeks storage at 25°C compared to a reference control (ie. sodium hypochlorite bleach solution
without Crodasinic HT). Table 1 overleaf details the available chlorine levels of BC21, as a percentage of its
initial value, after a six-week storage period.

Crodasinic HT has also been evaluated in a 7.5% available chlorine sodium hypochlorite bleach solution
(formula BC22). Once again Crodasinic HT effectively thickened the bleach solution without promoting any
degradation during storage - see figure 2 (viscosity profiles) and table 2 (available chlorine levels).

Wetting performance
Crodasinic HT improves the wetting performance of bleach formulations, as tested in BC21 and BC22. These
formulations containing Crodasinic HT were similar in surface tension to a leading market product also
evaluated, as shown in figure 3 below.

Surface tension is an important property of cleaning products and is a good indicator of their wetting
performance. The surface tension of the test bleach systems was determined at 25°C using a Cahn Dynamic
Contact Angle Analyser 322.

Biodegradability
Crodasinic HT is readily biodegradable as defined in Directive 93/21/EEC test OECD301E.

Health and safety

Crodasinic HT is non-toxic on ingestion, it is irritating to skin and may cause serious damage to the eyes as
supplied. Contact with the skin and eyes should be avoided if handling the neat material. If contact occurs flush
the affected area with water, seek medical advice if irritation persists. A separate MSDS is available on request
from the Industrial sales team.
