Read the story before doing the dictionary skills activities.
TOKNE THE BULLY
by Rodelio O. Ritual MT-II

One day, a boy named Tokne looked into

the classroom of Mrs. Maranan in Matapat
Elementary School. The class was quiet
answering activities given by the teacher. Tokne
saw the teacher and he smiled at her. The
teacher thought that he was just passing by with
a good smile on his face. Five minutes later one
pupil named Karlo came running to Mrs.
Maranan crying. “What happened to you Karlo?
asked Mrs. Maranan. Karlo narrated that he was
bullied by Tokne.
He was just going to the comfort room when suddenly Tokne who
came from inside shouted at him saying a nasty word. When Karlo did
not react, Tokne pulled his T-shirt up. “What did I do to you?” cried Karlo.
Then after Tokne saw Karlo started crying, he just walked away as if
nothing happened.
What Tokne never knew was that there was a CCTV camera in
front of the comfort room. Mrs. Manaloto, the principal who was also
monitoring what was happening on the different sides of the school
noticed the incident. She immediately told the nurse and the janitor to
see the place. Mrs. Maranan told everything and she let Karlo and
Tokne go to the Guidance Office together with the nurse.
The guidance teacher and the principal knew the whole story.
They called the attention of both parents, but unfortunately Tokne said
that he’s just living with a close relative after both of his parents died
due to a fire that broke out in their area years back. Sadly, Tokne really

needs parental care since at his age of 10, he doesn’t realize the
consequences of his bullying behaviour. His situation affects him too
much.
The DSWD social worker monitored Tokne since then. The
guidance teacher and the adviser also made some interventions to
transform him to be a better student. “God is really good, Tokne now is a
responsible child, he mingles with his classmates better now, his grades
have improved a lot and Karlo is one of his friends already ”, said Mrs.
Torres his adviser. “Yes, bullies still have a chance to change, we just
need to show them that we care and help them as much as we could”,
said the principal. Tokne promised “I will finish my studies for my future,
now I have realized that bullying can cause problems to my victims and
trouble to me, I will never be a bully anymore,” said Tokne.

Read the following details about a thesaurus before doing the activities
provided.
WHAT IS A THESAURUS?
A thesaurus is a reference book that contains the
meanings and synonyms of all the words of the
language.
A thesaurus is used on a computer while writing
an e-mail, letter, or paper to find an alternative
meaning for words. For example, repeating the same
word throughout your writing can become repetitive to
a reader, and you could use a thesaurus to get a
synonym of the word.

8
STEPS FOR USING A THESAURUS
1. The very first step to using a thesaurus is to choose a word. This
word could be anything as the thesaurus contains the meanings of
all the words.
2. Once you have the word that you want the meaning of, it is time to
search for the meaning
3. Look at the words. These words are either the meanings and
synonyms of that word. Synonyms are the words that have a
similar meaning.
4. When you are done finding the meaning of that word, you can look
for other words as well. Get some other words that you find difficult
and search for their meanings in the thesaurus.

Write briefly your answer based on what you read and previous
knowledge about a thesaurus.
