The passive voice
The active voice focuses on “the performer” of an action
The passive voice focuses on “the receiver” of the action
Active Voice: Picasso painted Guernica in 1937. (Focus on the
subject, Picasso- the performer)
Passive voice: Guernica was painted by Picasso in 1937. (Focus on
the object, Guernica – the receiver)
• Use a by phrase in passive voice sentences when it is important to identify the
performer of an action
This dress was designed by Donatella Versace (important)
This bowl was found by someone in Costa Rica (not important)
The passive voice
Rules of conversion from Active to Passive Voice
1. Identify the subject, the verb, the object: S+V+O
2. Change the Object into the subject
3. Put the suitable helping verb or auxiliary verb
4. Change the verb into past participle of the verb
5. Add the preposition “by”
6. Change the subject into object
Example
Active voice: Andreina wrote a letter
(Subject) + (verb) + (object)

Passive voice: A letter was written by Andreina


(Object)+ (auxiliary verb) + (past participle)+ (by + subject)

Yes/no questions
To form yes/no questions in the passive voice, move the first auxiliary verb before the
subject.

Simple present tense Are famous paintings are bought by art collectors?

Present Perfect Have Yu Hung´s paintings have been bought by some world leaders?

Simple past tense Was the Grand Pyramid at the Louvre was designed by I.M. Pei?

Past Continuous Were copies of Monet´s paintings were being sold by the museum?
