AT ANY TIME, YOU MAY MOVE FASTER IN THIS COURSE

A WORD TO THE WISE: Before you start reading the chapters, go ahead and look at the
research paper and reflection paper so you can make notes as you go through the chapters.

Students should complete the assignment/practice test for Ch. 1 by the due date in order to be
certified in the class. No certification: No financial aid money. We must certify all students
whether they are on financial aid or not. If you are receiving financial aid, you need to keep
working steadily in the class. Occasionally, instructors will switch sections.
Let’s Get Started

Welcome. I am Ricky Reeves, your online Humanities 1302 instructor. I am here to help you
get started and to get finished. Did you just read that there are several sections of this online
course this semester?. Occasionally, we do swap sections. When you email me with anything,
you must put your name and your specific section number in the Subject Box. I simply do not
open email unless I can identify its sender and the section. The next thing to do is to make a hard
copy of this “What To Do List”, O.K.?

Important Information

1. Go to the ecampus website by clicking here: Ecampus Link. Don’t confuse

ecampus.dcccd.edu with econnect.dcccd.edu. You want eCampus.
2. Next, click on Access eCampus.
3. For the Username and Password, you must use the id# that you get when you enroll.
Without that number, you are “dead in the water.” Login using that id# both as your
username and password but there is a “twist”. eCampus users (read You) must put an “e”
in front of their id# for both username and password. (i.e., e1234567). Then click on
2021SP-HUMA-1302-22431 Intro to Humanities II—this may vary with software
upgrades. Put your name and your personal section number in the Subject Box at the top
of the screen. If you try to get into the website before the start date of your course, you
may be denied access. Sometimes you can get in as a Guest or by clicking on Preview.

ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING: Go to the MY DCCCD tab and click on Personal
Information. Then select Edit My Personal Information. This way you will receive
important information that we send from the web site. Make sure you email address is
correct.
4. Go to Start Here and read the Syllabus “stuff.” On the ANNOUNCEMENTS page, read
the current announcements and scroll down the page to download the specific plugins
WINDOWS MEDIA 9 and FLASH PLAYER and check for updates.
5. Buy a copy of the text. Discovering the Humanities, 4th ed., Revel or e-text
Author: Henry Sayre
Publisher: Prentice Hall/Pearson Custom Publishing
ISBN:  9780135198346 (Revel), 9780135198353 (e-text subscription).
Click on this link for more information on how to obtain the textbook from the
Brookhaven College bookstore via the internet:  College Bookstore Website.
6. After you have completed the units for Chapters 1-3 by reading the chapter information,
the text and doing the assignment, go to Critical Dates/Calendar and get the password for
the exam or read the calendar listed above. You must be logged into the website as a User
and not a Guest in order to use the special password and test. The second and last test
covers Chapters 4-6. Again remember to hit Submit one time only when sending
assignments and tests.

Tips from Tech Support

If you email your instructor and you do not receive a reply within 24 hours, check your
JUNK email box and your email FILTERS and SETTINGS. Chances are, with the first
email correspondence, you may not receive the first response from your instructor if you
have not checked your filters. Check to make sure that your box is empty enough to
receive new email. Some email providers set an inbox limit.

Here are a few more tips from Tech Support but check the Announcements page for
System Requirements. You can also check for compatibility on the My DCCCD
page in Ecampus under Browser Test and clicking on Test Your Browser. You can
reach Tech Support at 972-669-6402 or by clicking on the following link:

1. Avoid using proprietary "customized" version of any browser, e.g., AOL, Earthlink,
CompuServ as all have their own customized versions of Internet Explorer that do not
support all of the security features of eCampus and eConnect.
2. Have all JAVA settings enabled in your browser.
3. Ensure your browser is set to accept all cookies.

If disconnecting remains a chronic problem you will need to go to your campus computer
lab to take the exams. Labs have much stronger connections and usually do not
disconnect during periods of inactivity.

If you are having trouble logging in and the computer doesn’t want to recognize
that you exist, call Tech Support at 972-669-6402. I am the content specialists.
They are the tech specialists.

More Important Information

E-mail me immediately if you disconnect and cannot access the test again so I can reset it
for you. Remember that once you open a quiz or test screen you cannot leave it for any
reason or the computer will take it away from you and submit it regardless of whether
you have started are nearly finished. When all else fails, email me. If your Internet
connection goes weird, fax us. If the phone lines are down just open the window and
yell. We won’t hear you but you will probably feel better. I do want to hear from you,
primarily by email and not by phone because we never seem to be found in our offices. I
am usually in a classroom.

One other thing. You have been registered in my class. Being registered does not
necessarily mean being paid. Pay ‘em, O.K.? If Financial Aid does not kick in fast
enough and you get dropped, let them and me know so we can get you back in.
Otherwise you will disappear.

Email Protocol

Everything that you send to your instructor must have your name and section
number in the Subject Box. Remember that only one or two of several students may be
enrolled in section 22430. Your section number might be different. With all of the
“viruses and worms” I am not going to open any email unless I know who it is from. I
don’t open things that say “Hi” or “Hello” or “Test.” I delete them automatically. I have
a lot of students in many online courses and I don’t have time to hunt you down to find
your personal section number and course. If you keep getting your assignments back
without grades, it is probably because you have not been putting your name and personal
section number in the Subject box. Another way to get your assignments back without
the benefit of grading is not to send in the Student Acknowledgement Form. No form:
No function.

What are my grades?

Here is a real important issue: How do you know how you are doing in this class? The
answer is simple, if you know it. When you are in the course there is a button on the left
side of your screen that says “Tools.” If you will click on that, you will have the option
to click on “My Grades.” There you are! You can check grades as many times as you
wish 24/7. You will always know how you are doing. Pay attention to the weighted
percentage that you have earned, not the points. And in conclusion. Please read the
announcements every time you log in. They really contain important stuff. Stuff that
will get you the good grade we want you to have.

This is real important stuff here, so listen up! If you need a Humanities 1302 online
grade released early, you must have all work submitted to your instructor one full week
before you need that grade. Remember: This is your job to contact us and say, “I have
turned in all of my work. Please complete the paperwork to release my grade.” From the
time of your statement to your instructor, it will take one full week to get the paperwork
done. If you tell us someone absolutely demands that grade right away, you are out of
luck. It cannot be done. It just takes longer than that. By state law, your grade may not
be released until one day after the withdraw date.

Have a great semester and keep in touch!
