Circular Functions
TRIGONOMETRY - LESSON 2

Consider a unit circle (i.e. the circle with radius = 1) with centre at the origin O.
Let P be a point on the circle such that OP makes angle θ with the x axis in
Anticlockwise direction i.e. ∠AOP = θ

P(cos θ, sin θ)
Then cosθ and sin θ
are defined as
cosθ = x – coordinate of P
θ sin θ = y – coordinate of P

Example: If A, B, C, D, are angles of cyclic quadrilateral then find

cos A + cos B + cos C + cos D
TRIGONOMETRY - LESSON 2

Example: If A, B, C, D, are angles of cyclic quadrilateral then prove that

cos A + cos B + cos C + cos D = 0.
Solution
cos (π – θ) = – cos (θ)
Since ABCD is a cyclic quadrilateral.
A + C = π and B + D = π
cos A + cos B + cos C + cos D
= cos A + cos B + cos (π – + cos (π – B)
A)
= cos A – cos A + cos B – cos B
