CAPITALISM vs.

COMMUNISM SIMULATION
ROUND 1: CAPITALIST LAND
• Everyone starts with a different amount of money, depending on the number you randomly selected
(what you were “born” with).
• Everyone with money participates in the “free market” (rock, paper, scissors). Those with no money
cannot play because they have nothing to start with. For every round you win, you take $10 from the
loser. For every round you lose, you give $10 to the winner.
• Society is unequal and some have more of an advantage than others, but there is economic freedom.
People can own their own businesses, decide their own wages and prices, and have a chance at
economic success even if they were not born wealthy. With this freedom comes a chance to fail as well.

ROUND 2: REVOLUTION
• Those with $10 or less at the end of Round 1 join together as "oppressed victims" of society. They start
a revolution against the wealthy "privileged oppressors" - those who have $40 or more - and the
government, which works together with the wealthy to keep the poor down in society.
• The government is overthrown, and a new leader emerges to lead the "oppressed victims" to a fairer
and better society.

ROUND 3: COMMUNIST LAND

• The new government is controlled by a leader who claims to speak for the "oppressed victims." Their
problems, the leader says, have been caused by the "privileged oppressors" that were just overthrown.
• The new leader declares that everyone with more than $10 is a "privileged oppressor.” This is unlike the
original idea that it was just the very wealthy who were a problem. To make society "fair," the new
leader takes all money from the people above $10. Those who had $0 before are now given $10.
• To keep everything "equal," the free market (rock, paper, scissors) is outlawed. The government
controls the entire economy - all resources, jobs, wages, etc. - to make sure that everything stays "fair."
Anyone who is seen as trying to gain an advantage in any way must be reported to the government
immediately and will be arrested as a traitor. If you know about and fail to report such activity, you will
be arrested as well. This must be done in order to maintain a "fair and equal" society. Government
leaders are excused from this, however, causing their wealth and power to grow.
