EXPERIMENT NO.

7
POTASSIUM ACETATE

OBJECTIVE:
At the end of the experiment, student should know how to:
1. Synthesized Potassium acetate
2. Perform tests for its identity
3. Describe deliquescence as a physical property of the synthesized compound and the
handling instructions that goes with it.

MATERIALS:
Laboratory set of apparatus
A sand bath set-up
water bath set-up

REAGENTS:
Potassium bicarbonate Ethyl alcohol
Diluted Acetic acid Conc. Sulfuric acid
Glacial Acetic acid Ferric chloride T.S.
Conc. Hydrochloric acid

PROCEDURE:
1. Add powdered Potassium bicarbonate (about 6 grams) to 10 ml of Acetic acid until
effervescence ceases.
2. Filter the solution and evaporate on a water bath, adding 1 or 2 drops of diluted acetic acid
from time to time.
3. When the solution becomes viscid, transfer the dish to a sand bath and continue the
evaporation at a temperature not exceeding 140 degrees Celsius, stirring constantly.
4. When dry, powder the residue in a current of warm dry air and bottle immediately.

QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH:

1. Define deliquescence.
Deliquescence refers to the property of a substance to absorb water from the air to
dissolve itself and form an aqueous solution.

2. What are the pharmacological actions of Potassium acetate?

Potassium acetate acts as an electrolyte replenisher of K ions. The major cation of the
intracellular fluid, K, is needed for the cell's acid-base, fluid, and electrolyte balance. It's also
essential for nerve conduction, cardiac, smooth, and skeletal muscle contraction, gastric
secretion, normal renal function, and carbohydrate metabolism.

3. Why is this drug not prescribed in a dry state?

Because it’s deliquescent property will cause instability, especially when it is
exposed to air.
