Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors
Alstom was the first train-builder to use IGBT technology in a locomotive. Our Onix IGBT-
technology, train propulsion system, guarantees the efficiency of the Prima's traction and
braking, as it does also in our full range of trains – from trams to very high speed trains.
This traction system is designed to be powered by any one of four voltages. It is composed
of a set of components, the most important being the IGBT inverter. IGBT technology
made it possible to reduce the size and the weight of the traction system while boosting its
performance. It improves the Prima's reliability and reduces its energy consumption.
Onix also features an integrated low-maintenance, low-noise ventilation system that
increases reliability and improves air flow.
In order to optimize your maintenance process, rolling stock must be equipped to deliver
an increasingly large amount of data swiftly. For this purpose it is essential to use infor-
mation technology such as wireless communication and centralized databases, fed via
Internet or your own Intranet. Prima locomotives are equipped with TrainTracer, the same
up-to-date technology that Alstom has already installed on high speed trains in United
Kingdom. Crash absorption beam
TrainTracer provides an effective way to monitor key components. Maintenance teams are
informed of each locomotive’s condition and possible failures in real time. It is also possible to
complete the system with a GPS locating system. Access to this information enables
maintenance teams to anticipate possible breakdowns and make the right diagnosis. It
also makes it easier, in the event of an incident, to carry out repairs in situ.
The risk of an accident can never be averted. In developing the Prima locomotive, Alstom
concentrated on maximizing the level of passive safety. Prima is designed to ensure total
DEPENDABILITY UNCOMPROMISED protection - for the driver and the key sub-systems. In the event of a collision, at a speed
of up to 65 km/h, the body of the locomotive is protected at the chassis level by energy

MOROCCO, ONCF
Morocco has launched a major program to modernize and restructure its railway
network. To be able to rapidly meet the steep increase in passenger and freight
traffic, the ONCF signed, in November 2007, a contract to acquire 20 Prima
units. The locomotives, equipped for 3kV power supply, are ideal to pull either
freight or passenger trains. They can however be easily upgraded to operate also
with a 25 kV power supply, should the operator require this in the future.
Particular attention was given to the comfort of the drivers: cabs are equipped
with air conditioning and the living space is designed to provide two drivers with
the best conditions. The last locomotive was delivered in August 2010.
In February 2007, Alstom delivered the first of the electric locomotives intended
for freight traffic on the Datong – Qinhuangdao line. The global contract signed
with the Chinese Ministry of Transport includes 180 Prima.
These double BoBo units powered by an individual traction drive for each axle
are the most powerful locomotive sets in the world. This customer uses two of
these 10 MW locomotives in double unit to haul loads of up to 20 000 tons. As
such, they are the perfect solution to the customer's haulage requirements on
this specific railway.
With its Onix IGBT traction system the Prima is particularly reliable, an essential
requirement on lines which only have a limited number of repair workshops.
In March 2007, Alstom signed a contract to deliver 500 CoCo triple axle
locomotives, with power of 9600 kW able to tow convoys of up to 8,000 tons.
Prima locomotives operating in China are built in partnership with a local train-
builder. The first locomotives were completed and unveiled early 2010 in China.
FRANCE, VEOLIA
In October 2005, Veolia Cargo signed a contract with ALSTOM Transport for
17 electric BoBo locomotives for cross-border freight haulage operations in
France and Germany. Other options have followed bringing the total number
of Prima locomotives ordered to 31. Alstom’s know-how and experience were
decisive in Veolia Cargo’s choice.
The contract, initiated by Veolia Cargo and now in the hands of Europorte
France, VCH and the leaser CB-Rail, includes a 10-year provision for a full
service preventive and corrective maintenance which is partly covered by our
remote maintenance system, TrainTracer.
On the French network, the electric Prima locomotives have covered over 130 million service kilometers
