What is It

Lesson
THE CONCEPTS OF COMMUNITY
1 AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

This lesson will describe healthy environment and its impact to the health of people
and communities.

Environmental Health comprises those aspects of human health that are

determined by physical , chemical , biological, social and psychosocial factors in the
surrounding environment.

Basic Requirements For a Healthy Environment

 Clean air
 Safe and sufficient water
 Safe and adequate food
 Safe and peaceful settlements
 Stable global environments

9
Environment is a place in which people live their lives .It can directly and
indirectly impact on their health and wellbeing. We need safe, healthy and supportive
environments for good health. The environment in which we live is a major determinant
of our health and wellbeing.
Our environment plays an important role in our health . In order to have good
health, we need to have safe, clean environments to live, work and play in. We depend
on the environment for energy and the materials needed to sustain life, such as clean
air, safe drinking water, nutritious food and safe places to live.

A healthy environment can enhance people’s quality of life: reduced mortality

and morbidity, healthier lifestyles, improved productivity of workers and their families,
improve lives of women, children and elderly and insure the safety of our lives not only
physically but also mentally.
A positive and healthy environment promotes hard and smart work. This
increases people's productivity and effectiveness. It gives hope and makes one to
always look forward to a positive tomorrow .

When the surrounding is not good and clean then life become hard and lots of
physical and mental illnesses will rise and people will not be able to work properly. As
a result, the amount of disease increases and people have to spend most of their
earnings on curing and treating these dangerous diseases that are brought up by a
bad and polluted environment.

By taking care of our environments, we take care of ourselves.
