PRACTICE-3
COMMON EMMITER BJT AMPLIFIER
(1 WEEK)
A. AIM

 Planning the DC bias current in the BJT for the symmetrical output
signal.
 Simulate the results of planning on multisim.
 Redesign if the output signal is not yet symmetrical.
 Apply the amplifier to the common emitter, and analyze the results.
 Analyze the frequency response of CE amplifier.

Short Theory

The theory of BJT states that the BJT needs proper biased current (I B) in order to
amplify an ac signal. One of the biased circuit is shown above where R1, R2, and R4
are selected to produce proper base current. The amplifier should have symmetrical
output signal and it can be achieved by

1. VE approximately 10 % up to 15 % Vcc
2. RE approximately 25 % of R3
3. R3 equals to RL (load resistance)
4. R2 approximately 10 x R4
5. R1 can be calculated by
using voltage divider rule.

C. PRACTICE DESCRIPTION

Plan the components for the circuit on the circuit diagram so that the AC output
signal is symmetrical for the AC load RL = 1000 ohms with a maximum output of 5
Vpp.

D. PROCEDURE

1. Open your multisim and select a NPN transistor component from your
multisim then get information about VCE max and the hfe or beta DC
value of the transistor. Define the value of Vcc. (less then V CEmax)
2. Select the value R3 is equal to RL (recommended value is 1000 Ω)
3. Choose a value of R4 close to 25% R3.
4. Calculate the VE value close to 10% of the selected Vcc value.
5. Calculate IE
6. Calculate re approximating 26 divided by I E
7. Calculate R2, at least 10x from R4.
8. Calculate R1 using the voltage divider theory with R 2.
9. Select C1, C2, and C3 (in micro units)
10. Calculate Av (voltage gain where Av = (R L // R3) / re
11. Calculate the maximum Vin (AC). (Vin (max) = Vout AC max. divided by Av)
12. Simulate the results in multisim for a frequency of 1 kHz.
13. Redesign if not symmetrical
14. Simulate in multisim for a frequency as shown at the table.
15. Build the CE amplifier as shown at the below picture (b)
16. Analysis of simulation results
17. Remove C3 and observe the output voltage.
18. Check the frequency response of the amplifier by using a bode plotter
and define lower frequency cut off (f L), high frequency cut off (fH), and
the bandwidth of the circuit.
observe the result.
19. Make conclusions.
