Hands-On
3D Shape Activities!
*Make sure you have a stash of 3D shapes so that learners can touch and
feel them for these activities. If you don’t have shapes, find smaller objects
around the classroom or at home to represent each shape.

3D Shape Hunt
How to Prep:
• Print a page for each learner.
• Be sure most, if not all, of the 3D shapes can be found in your
environment or in the magazines you provide for learners to fill in
their chart.
How to Use:
• Learners search for things that match the 3D shapes and draw
them in their chart.
• Learners could also cut and glue pictures from magazines.

Building
3D Shapes
How to Prep:
• Gather playdough, mini marshmallows, and toothpicks. To build a
few of the 3D shapes properly, it helps to have toothpicks of two
different lengths – one shorter and one longer. It may help to
buy some from a dollar store and others from a grocery store to
ensure two different lengths.
• Cut out & laminate cards.
How to Use:
Learners build the 3D shapes and
fill in the missing information on
the cards. (If the cards are
laminated, learners can use dry
erase marker.)

Cards
How to Prep:
• Cut out & laminate cards.
• Provide clothespins to clip “yes” or “no” on the cards.
• Provide real 3D shapes/blocks so learners can try to stack the
two shapes.
How to Use:
Learners clip “yes” or “no” based on if the shapes can stack.

Roll, Slide,
or Both?
How to Prep:
• Create a slightly sloped inclined plane such as a clip board with
small blocks under one side.
• Provide 3d shapes for learners to use.
How to Use:
• Learners gently let each shape go down the inclined plane.
• Learners sort the shapes in the Venn Diagram and glue them
down.
Optional Ideas:
• Learners can work as partners or in small groups if you don’t have enough 3D
shapes.
• Ask learners to predict where they think the shapes will go BEFORE they try
any of the 3D shapes.
• Follow up with the recording sheet on pages 34 or 35.
www.thisreadingmama.com
Roll, Slide, or Both?
Cut out the 3D shapes at the bottom of the page. Using real 3D shapes (or objects) let each go down a smooth, slightly sloped inclined
plane. How does each shape move? Does it just roll, just slide, or both roll and slide? Use the recording page to answer questions.

3D Shape Nets
How to Prep:
• Copy onto cardstock. Regular paper may be too flimsy.
How to Use:
• Optional: Learners color each face and surface a different color.
• Learners cut, fold, and glue/tape to make the 3D shapes.
• Learners can label the faces and/or
edges of each shape.

How to Prep:
• Copy page 41 or 42 for each learner.
• Provide the 3D shapes listed on the page so learners can touch
