CHAPTER I

SCHOOL PROFILE

1.1 Brief Background

Marian Learning Center and Science High School is an educational

institution founded by a group of educators who saw the need for more

educational institutions in Batangas City, in 1987. This group of educators

formed a corporation that started working on the documents and permit

needed to open a pre-school. This planning took place along with the

celebration of Marian Year, which is why the school was named after Mama

Mary. After this, the pre-school aptly named Marian Learning Center, started

its operation in a rented lot at D. Silang St., Batangas City, year 1988.

The institution garnered positive feedback from parents and the

community which is why the elementary department was opened at the same

site. The school further progressed and was challenged by the demand for a

science high school. Securing a lot in Alangilan, the high school department

“Marian Learning Center and Science High School” was born on June 1996,

pre-school and elementary were also offered at the site. The first batch of

high school graduates was produced in March 2000, which made MLCSHS

gain recognition not only in the city but also in the colleges where the

graduates enrolled.

1.3. Course/Strand Description

STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) is an

educational program developed to prepare primary and secondary students for

college and graduate study in the fields of science, technology, engineering,

and mathematics (STEM). In addition to subject-specific learning, STEM aims

to foster inquiring minds, logical reasoning, and collaboration skills.

In the United States, the program helps immigrants with skills in the STEM

subjects obtain work visas. In addition, STEM focuses on perceived education

quality shortcomings in these fields, with the aim of increasing the supply of

qualified high-tech workers.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are intertwining

disciplines when applied in the real world. The difference of the STEM

curriculum with the other strands and tracks is the focus on advanced

concepts and topics.

Under the track, you can become a pilot, an architect, an astrophysicist, a

biologist, a chemist, an engineer, a dentist, a nutritionist, a nurse, a doctor,

and a lot more. Those who are also interested in Marine Engineering should

take this track.

CHAPTER III

INTERNSHIP TRAINING ACTIVITIES

3.1 NARRATIVE EXPERIENCES

3.1.1 Observation

When I entered the Creotec facility, I knew that it was different from our

usual school setting because everything felt foreign to us. The words “Keep

right”, “Observe silence” and “One line only” filled my ears as I timidly

followed my classmates to our designated room. I witnessed the calculated

movements of the people in the office there and the other students that were

having their immersion before us. The white walls inside the facility were free

of dirt, making them a little bit confining. But these walls became our home for

two weeks, they contained all the new and wonderful experiences that we had

as trainees of the Creotec Philippines. The floors were also mesmerizing as

they were full of arrow stickers, these stickers guided us to always “Keep

Right”.

3.1.2 Interaction

On our first day as trainees under Creotec, we were able to meet the

support staff and the instructors of Creotec. The deemed support staff are

students like us, they are trainees from St. Joseph Academy having their

immersion ahead of us. They were the ones who governed over us during our

first week as trainees, informing us about the rules and regulations in the

facility and enforcing them. The instructors were the ones who taught us

during our work immersion for two weeks. They taught us what we will do

during the work immersion and why were we going through it. I learned a lot

about the EMS Group of Companies, where Creotec is a branch of, the

proper work ethics that we need to exercise while inside the Creotec facility,

and how the application of the Japanese culture can improve the work done

in a workplace.

3.1.3 Participation

As part of the Health and Safety Department, I, along with my co-staff and

co-support team, was assumed to be role models for our co-trainees. This is

to ensure that the rules and regulations inside Creotec is properly enforced

and followed.

We were tasked to make memorandums to ensure that the trainees obey

the safety rules and regulations. Conducting an energizer every afternoon

was mandatory for us because it is one of our memorandums to make sure

that the trainees are not tardy. Another memorandum was to check the trash

bin of every lecture room, production room and support office, to ensure that

the trash is properly segregated. Make-Up Inspection, a memorandum, was

also done because applying make-up is not allowed in the lecture rooms and

the production room.

3.2 Challenges

3.2.1 Problems Met & Solutions Offered

During our two-week Work Immersion, I was faced with two major

problems, intrapersonal conflict and self-doubt.

I experienced a major intrapersonal conflict when I was placed, along with

my classmates, in a lecture room that is dedicated to preparing trainees for

production. I knew that when I heard the word “production”, I wasn’t supposed

to be at that lecture room. I thought to myself that I should be learning

something that is related to my preferred course in college – Medicine – not

something that involves electronics and/or manufacturing. At first, I withheld

my eagerness to ask about my concern. I chose to keep my concern to

myself because I didn’t want to disobey what the school instructed us to do,

which is to have our work immersion at Creotec. But when I went home, I let

out my frustrations to my mom. I even cried because I panicked, and I thought

that the school didn’t value what I wanted to do in the future. But, by the

advice of my mother, I asked our Work Immersion Coordinator and our

Guidance Counselor on what I can do about this matter. They instructed me

to stay where I was, and they would take care of it. They did, as I was

transferred to the Human Resource Department to be a part of the Health and

Safety Staff. When I heard about this, I rejoiced because I felt like my

projected future career in medicine was valued and that I was going to do

something that interested me.

I experienced a lot of self-doubt when I was inside Creotec. This was

really amplified when I became a part of the Health and Safety Staff, when I

was tasked to be the leader. Even though I had experience as a leader at

school and at extra-curricular activities, I felt anxious this time around

because I knew that whatever I did in this Work Immersion might impact my

future as a safety provider. But I didn’t let anxiety get the best of me, I

believed in myself and my capabilities to perform as a dependable leader.

I was also very doubtful about myself when I, along with my team, needed

to attend to our co-trainees who didn’t feel well. Because being a health and

safety provider was a big responsibility, we tend to second-guess ourselves

about how we will treat or take care someone who felt sick. But we knew that

we needed to have composure to help the ones who didn’t feel very well, and

that’s what we did. We also asked for and received assistance from the

instructors in Creotec on how to treat the trainees that were sick.

CHAPTER IV

RESULTS AND FINDINGS

4.1 Accomplishments and Contributions

During my work immersion experience at Creotec Philippines for two

weeks, I can say that I have accomplished a lot as a student and as a trainee.

As a student I became to realize that the learning we receive everyday

aren’t just for the computations of our grades. I realized that like in Creotec,

the lessons we pick up from our instructors/teachers can be and are applied

to real life. For example, being diligent, specifically being on time, can be very

beneficial to a person because it is a commendable practice that may be

observed in the offices that we will work in soon. Following rules and

regulations were also strictly implemented in the Creotec facility. This has

changed how we, the Grade 12 students, act in and out of the school. These

count as accomplishments to me because with every passing day, I become

more disciplined and more mature which is befitting to me as a young adult.

I have also accomplished a lot as a trainee of Creotec Philippines. As part

of the Health and Safety staff, I can say that we were effective as Health and

Safety Staff because we were able was able to give relief to those who felt

sick and we were able to enforce the Safety Rules and Regulations of the

facility. I was even tasked to be the leader of our department and as my co-

Health and Safety Staff stated, I did well.

4.2 Competencies Gained

Being a part of the Health and Safety Staff has helped me to improve my

communication skills, leadership skills, and my commitment to my future

career.

I improved my communication skills through interacting with the people at

the Creotec facility, the instructors, the janitress and my co-trainees. I was

able to communicate with my co-Health and Safety Staff especially when we

need to take care of several trainees at a time. I also was able to speak what

was in my mind whenever I needed to ask assistance from someone or when

I needed to someone to do something for me. My communication skills were

also developed because I needed to muster up my courage whenever we

needed to announce something in front of other people.

As I was tasked to be the leader of our department, I was able to exercise

and improve my leadership skills. This is because I was able to divide the

workload that we needed to do at our department as a leader of our group. I

also instructed my team on what to do whenever we needed to take care of a

trainee or many trainees. I also had to be strict about enforcing the Safety

Rules and Regulations of the Creotec facility.

11

Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics

I also enhanced my commitment to my future career when I transferred to

the Human Resource Department. I did that to be assigned to the Health and

Safety Department which is close to my projected future career in the field of

Medicine. I was happy to know that I did get accepted into my preferred

department. This made me realize that I really want to pursue a career in

medicine.

4.3 Impact to Chosen Career

Being a part of the Health and Safety Staff has made my choice to pursue

a career in Medicine certain. As I have stated above, when I learned that the

STEM students are going to be assigned to the production area, I knew I had

to do something. This is because I knew that the production is far from my

chosen career. That is why I was so happy when I was assigned to the Health

and Safety Department because there I had a taste of what I, hopefully will do

in the future.

4.4 Duties and Responsibilities

Position: Leader of the Health and Safety Staff

Brief Description: Become the Head of the Health and Safety Staff and

enforce the Safety Rules and Regulations of the Creotec facility.

Duties and Responsibilities:

As leader of our department, I was tasked to be the head and to divide the

work that we must do. The Health and Safety Staff was tasked to enforce the

Safety Rules and Regulations inside the Creotec Facility. We are expected to

ensure the health and safety of not only the trainees, but also of all of the

people inside the facility. We are also expected to attend to those who are

feeling and to look after them until they are better. We are presumed to serve

as role models to the trainees, especially the new trainees, for them to abide

by the given rules of Creotec Inc.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1 Summary

I am glad that I was able to experience this work immersion because it

opened my eyes to the different departments inside the company. I also found

out how one should act in an office environment and how rules and regulations

are meant to be abided. I am very thankful to have been a part of the Health

and Safety staff because it my decision of pursuing a career in Medicine

firmer.

5.2 Conclusion

In my experience as a trainee under Creotec Philippines Inc., I can say

that I have changed. I have changed as an individual because this experience

has taught me numerous things. It has taught me to be responsible for my

actions as they may dictate what other people might think of me as a person and

as an employee. I have also managed to learn that being a health and safety

provider takes patience, stamina, and hard work. Through these, I can say that I

have changed for the better because I know that I have developed certain skills

from this two-week work immersion program.

5.3 Recommendations

I have had a wonderful and eye-opening experience as a trainee under

Creotec Philippines for our work immersion for two weeks. As a pioneer in this

field, they have developed a fine curriculum that helps students pursuing

Electronics, Manufacturing, Accounting, and Human Resources gain

experience in a simulation workplace. The downside to this is that the students

pursuing other fields might be forced into doing something different or far from

their chosen future career. This puts a strain unto what they can do inside the

facility. Therefore, I recommend that Creotec Philippines Inc. expands their

coverage of courses to be offered to give a chance to those who are not

pursuing a career in the fields mentioned above. They may collaborate with

other companies to provide a wider array of courses in their work immersion

program.
