Direction: Read the mini-case and answer the following case questions.

1. What role did personality play in this case? Which of the Big Five
personality traits most clearly influenced Marian and Dave? What mental
and emotional ability played a role in this situation?

Personality really plays a big role in all the instances of our lives most
especially in our workplace. Thus, in this case, it can be seen how such
experience did affect Marian, not just for her but the working environment as
well. There are really instances wherein our attitude do really influence our
work in a negative way. That is why, we really need to have control over
ourselves and to different situations. Despite being so much good in our field,
if we are not into good terms with the people we work with, it will really affect
our performance. That is why, we need to handle well our personalities most
especially when we are in our workplace because this would really have an
impact with our performance.

Amongst the five personality traits, the ones that clearly influenced Marian
and Dave are neuroticism and conscientiousness. For Marian, she has the
trait of conscientiousness considering that she has the idea of having the
strong desire to complete a task-related goal or an accomplishment striving
one. She was determined to improve their performance despite being
distracted by their situation. As to Dave, he has the trait of neuroticism
wherein he does not have full confidence as to the ability of Marian, also he
has this bad feeling about her and he was then not emotionally stable

Thus, despite their situation, Dave was still able to manage it. Despite the
fact that Marian’s anger grew, she was still emotionally secure and was able
to hold the meeting and communicate with the employees using analytical
abilities.

2. What should have Marian done when trouble first seemed to be

brewing? How could she have maintained Dave’s job satisfaction and
commitment?

Marian’s attitude in the workplace, as she first set her foot inside the office
knowing that Dave has resentments to her, was supposed to be direct
towards Dave instead of generally confronting all the Loan heads and
employers when the loan volume was decreasing. This action may have
resolved the issue sooner and had no negative consequences on other
workers or the company's stability. If Marian was able to be trustworthy and
build her credibility to the sight of Dave, he could have been consistent in
terms of being respectful and committed. Dave’s actions could have been
corrected and made him aware of his limitations because it seemed that Dave
had been engrossed in his own feelings and had forgotten that Marian had no
intention of hurting his feelings from the start. Thus, discussing with Dave first
about the issue could have improved the situation and helped establish a
constructive relationship between him and the rest of the team.

3. How should Marian proceed now that the situation has become very
difficult?

Conflicts in a workplace usually happens, but in order to resolve them and

move forward, one must first identify the root cause of the problem. In this
case, Marian could have change the situation if she was able to talk to Dave
about the unfair treatment she felt from the start. It would not have led to the
point where their work has been affected and the company as a whole but,
Marian has the responsibility to fix things in order to bring back the quality of
their work. So first, she should exclude the possibility of firing Dave because
doing so would just worsen the situation among the other staff, when majority
of them respects him. She should politely approach Dave and tell him how
uncomfortable she feels every time he behaves dominantly towards her. She
then, should make clear that she has no intention of hurting his feelings and
would be delighted to work with him and get suggestions from him upon
resolving the challenges faced by the company. With this, she can work on
the relationship she has with her staff through promoting open
communication, teamwork and respect to everyone. Moreover, being new to
the company Marian must also exert an effort to adapt to the culture of the
company as well as improve those things that will hinder their efficiency.
Although working on a new environment will be a challenge for Marian but
with comprise and communication, she and her staff will resolve these kind of
challenges and improve their quality of work.
