Recognizing Faulty Logic, Unsupported Facts, and Emotional Appeal

To avoid being deceived by fallacies or false news, it's critical to be able to spot faulty logic,
unsupported evidence, and emotional appeal. Fallacies may cause readers to lose track of what is true and
valid reasoning. The writer's use of logic, facts, and appeal in presenting his or her motives or claims
determines the importance and worth of ideas. It is crucial to understand how to spot defective logic.
The following is a dictionary of words for your convenience:
a) The use and analysis of valid reasoning are referred to as LOGIC.
b) FAULTY refers to something incorrect or deceptive due to flaws.
c) A FACT is something that has happened or is happening right now.
d) APPEAL is the ability to cause a sympathetic reaction.
Presenting an incomplete or invalid justification is referred to as faulty logic. It defies logic to reach a
conclusion that they prefer. The term "unsupported facts" refers to a statement that is not backed up by written
evidence. Faulty emotional appeal refers to the use of emotional appeals that are unrelated to the argument,
divert attention away from the main point, and appear to hide something.

Example
Faulty Logic: When it comes to cheating, the majority of people are nervous. You seem nervous, so you're
cheating. (The logic is faulty because not all nervous people are cheaters.)
Unsupported Fact: Students in South Cotabato are friendlier than students in Davao.
(There is no written fact or reference for this statement)
Emotional appeal: Vote for me and I will erase your pain and suffering from poverty and unemployment.
(This is a faulty emotional appeal because the speaker uses people’s pain to decide to vote
for him or her.)
