Bias is the action of supporting or opposing a particular person or thing in an unfair way,
because of allowing personal opinions to influence your judgment. Being biased would mean
losing the neutral balance of a particular issue. Though “bias” has its negative connotation but it is
not true all the time.
Biased toward- you leaned favorably toward it
Biased against- you leaned negatively against it
A person influenced by bias is called biased.
Example:
Biased toward: The beliefs and practices of Roman Catholic are superior to other religion.
Biased against: Other religion criticizes Roman Catholic in worshipping images of Jesus
and saints.

1. Amanda grew in an island. Every day she went to the sea to swim. She grew up as a good
swimmer. On her high school days, she joined a swimming competition but she lost the
game.

Prejudice is an adverse opinion or leaning formed without just grounds or before


sufficient knowledge. It simply means to pre-judge others.
Prejudice is more linked into a feeling which oftentimes ended into discrimination. Over the time,
making a person informed and learned lessen prejudice if not be totally removed.

Examples:
1. The manager gives only orders to the young employees because he has the perception that
older employees cannot do the task.
2. Ben, a deaf, was not hired into work because of his disability.

It is important to be able to recognize prejudice and bias in what you read. What do these
words mean?
Bias is having a tendency to favor toward or favor against a certain person, group or thing
often in an unfair way.
Prejudice is the opinion or feeling formed towards a person, group, or thing without enough
knowledge or reason.
Examples: The report blames most crime in the town on the teenagers. (prejudice)
My aunt loves dogs that are black, like her own. (bias)
