Intended use
This instrument has been designed to be used with an Olympus endoscope,
Video system, accessories and other ancillary equipment for observation,
diagnosis and endoscopic treatment.
Do not use this instrument for any purpose other than its intended use.
Instruction manual
This instruction manual contains essential information on using this instrument
safely and effectively. Before use, thoroughly review this manual and the
manuals of all equipment which will be used during the procedure and use the
instruments as instructed.
Keep this and all related instruction manuals in a safe, accessible location.

Videoscope
This is an endoscope with a built-in CCD at its distal end to enable you to
view images on a monitor without using a camera head.
This mode provides brighter illumination than the normal intensity mode.
User qualifications
The operator of this instrument must be a physician or medical personnel under
the supervision of a physician and must have received sufficient training in
clinical endoscopic technique. This manual, therefore, does not explain or
discuss clinical endoscopic procedures.
Instrument compatibility
Refer to the “System chart” in the Appendix to confirm that this instrument is
compatible with the ancillary equipment being used. Using incompatible
equipment can result in patient injury and/or equipment damage.

The connector transmits light to the connected endoscope or light guide
cable.
5. Standby mode indicator
The indicator lights when the standby mode is selected.

The indicator lights when the MANUAL brightness control is selected.
8. AUTO indicator

10. Brightness control switches
Press to set the video brightness level (in AUTO mode), or to adjust the
light level (in MANUAL mode).
11. Emergency lamp indicator
The indicator lights when the emergency lamp (halogen) is in use and
blinks when the emergency lamp switch lever is left in an intermediate
position or the emergency lamp is malfunctioning.
12. Brightness level indicator
These indicators display the current brightness level.
13. Intensity mode selector
Press to switch between the high intensity mode and normal intensity
mode (when using an endoscope compatible with the high intensity mode).
14. High intensity mode indicator
The indicator lights when high intensity mode is selected.
15. Lamp life meter
The meter indicates the approximate number of hours that the main lamp
(xenon)has been used.
16. Standby switch
Press to temporarily deactivate the illumination light.
Press again to exit from the standby mode and reactivate the illumination
light.
17. Emergency lamp switch lever
When the switch lever is set to the “EMERGENCY LAMP” position, the
emergency lamp (halogen) will turn ON. If the lever is set at an
intermediate position, neither the main lamp (xenon) nor the emergency
lamp (halogen) will turn ON. Be sure to set the switch lever to either the
“MAIN LAMP” or “EMERGENCY LAMP” position.

1. VIDEO IN connector
When the video system is connected, the brightness can be automatically
controlled by the video signals from the video system.
2. SYSTEM connector
The connector accepts connection from an external unit for control of
brightness and other settings.
3. VIDEO OUT connector
The connector passes the video signal to the monitor.
4. AC inlet
The inlet accepts the AC power cord.
5. Circuit breakers
The breakers shut down the power supply when higher current than rated
flows through the equipment.
6. LIGHT CONT. connector
The connector is used for automatic brightness control when connected to
an Olympus OTV-S5, OTV-S6, OTV-S7V, OTV-SX or OTV-SX2 video
system.
7. Equipotential terminal
In the case of equipotential, connect this terminal to a potential
equalization busbar of the electrical installation.
8. Lamp access cover
The cover is opened to allow replacement of the main lamp (xenon).
9. Cover
The cover is removed to allow attachment of the connector cover holder.
10. Side bumpers
The bumpers prevent the air vents from being obstructed. They also
prevent the light source from being placed on its side.
S Turn the light source OFF, and confirm that the power
switches for all other equipment are “OFF” before
connecting them. Otherwise, equipment damage can result.
S Use only light guide cables that are compatible with this
instrument. Equipment damage or malfunction can result if
non-compatible cables are used.
S Do not place the light source in a location exposed to direct
sunlight, X-rays, radioactivity or strong electromagnetic
radiation (near microwave medical treatment equipment,
short-wave medical treatment equipment, MRI or radio
equipment). The light can be unstable.
Prepare the instrument and other equipment that are used with this instrument
before each use, according to the “System chart” in the Appendix. Refer to the
instruction manuals for each equipment. Install and connect all equipment
described as follows:
3.1 Installation
Be sure to remove the orange tape. If the tape is attached, the lamp life meter
will not work (see Figure 3.1).

When using a fiberscope (BF TYPE 40 series/CHF TYPE 20 series), attach the
provided connector cover holder to this instrument (see Figure 3.2, 3.3).
S Pull out the cover from the side panel of this instrument.
S Push the connector cover holder into the hole on the side panel of this
instrument.

1. Lift the connector cover locking hook upward, then pull it toward you to
remove the connector cover (see Figure 3.10).

1. Make sure that the power switch is OFF. The surface of the power switch
should be almost flush with the front panel surface (see Figure 3.17).

2. Connect the power cord to the inlet on the rear panel of the light source
and connect the power plug to a wall mains outlet (see Figure 3.18).

Chapter 4 Inspection
According to the “System chart” in the Appendix, prepare this instrument and
other equipment that are used with this instrument for the particular case. Refer
to the respective instruction manual for each piece of equipment.

1. Confirm that the power cord is connected securely to a wall mains outlet
and the AC inlet on the light source.
2. Confirm that the lamp access cover is completely closed (see Figure 4.2).
If it is not closed, power cannot be supplied to the light source.

3. Confirm the circuit breakers. If the breakers are not popped out, turn the
light source OFF. Do not use the light source and immediately contact
Olympus. If the breakers have tripped (popped out), reset them according
to steps 4. and 5.
4. Turn the light source OFF, disconnect the power cord from the wall mains
outlet and depress both the circuit breakers until they click (see Figure
4.3).

5. Reconnect the power cord and turn the light source ON. Confirm that
power is being supplied to the light source.
1. If the emergency lamp indicator blinks and the warning buzzer sounds,
check to see if the emergency lamp switch lever is properly set to the main
lamp position. Unless the switch lever is set to this position, the main lamp
(xenon) will not light. If the emergency lamp switch lever is not properly set
to the main lamp position, move the switch lever all the way to this
position. Then, after turning the light source OFF, turn the light source ON
again to ignite the xenon lamp.
2. When the light source is turned ON, it will take approximately 5 seconds
before the main lamp (xenon) lights up. If it does not come on, turn the
light source OFF again and then ON again to repeat the lamp ignition. If
the lamp still fails to ignite, replace it with a new one.
If the emergency lamp indicator blinks but the warning buzzer does not sound,
an emergency lamp malfunction may be suspected. Stop using the light source
and contact Olympus.

If the indicator reaches over 500h, replace the lamp with a new one as
described in Chapter 6, “Lamp replacement”.
S Be sure to remove the orange tape from the lamp life meter
(see Figure 3.1 on page 20). If the tape is attached, the
lamp life meter will not work.
S The lamp life meter is not active when the light source is
OFF.
3. Insert the light guide connector into the output connector on the front panel
of the light source until it stops.
4. Confirm that the lamp is illuminated and that light is emitted from the
endoscope’s distal end as shown below (see Figure 4.5).

S When the power switch is turned ON, the light source automatically
attempts to ignite the xenon lamp for up to about 5 seconds. If the
xenon lamp fails to ignite, expiration of the lamp’s lifetime or improper
mounting of the lamp may be suspected. Replace the lamp according
to the instructions given in Chapter 6, “Lamp replacement”.
S Make sure that the indicator of the lamp life meter is blinking constantly.
If it is not, contact Olympus.

The standby mode has been selected. Turn the standby mode OFF by pressing
the standby switch.
Confirm that no light is emitted from the light source by following the procedures
described below.
1. While emitting light from the endoscope, disconnect the endoscope. Place
a piece of paper over the output connector of the light source and confirm
that no light is being emitted from it (see Figure 4.6).
2. Reconnect the endoscope to the output connector and confirm that light is
emitted from the distal end of the endoscope (see Figure 4.5).

2. Connect the light guide cable of the endoscope to the output connector on
the light source.
3. Press the standby switch to activate the standby mode (see Figure 4.7).
4. Confirm that the standby mode indicator comes on and that the light
emitted from the endoscope’s distal end decreases.
5. Press the standby switch to cancel the standby mode (see Figure 4.7).
6. Confirm that the standby mode indicator goes out and the brightness of
light output from the distal end of scope increases gradually.

4. Press the intensity mode selector to activate the high intensity mode (see
Figure 4.8).
5. Confirm that the high intensity mode indicator comes on and a brighter
light is emitted from the endoscope’s distal end.
6. Press the intensity mode selector to engage the normal intensity mode.
7. Confirm that the high intensity mode indicator goes out and that the light
emitted from the endoscope’s distal end decreases.
8. Press the intensity mode selector again and confirm that the high intensity
mode is restored.
9. Disconnect the endoscope. Confirm that the high intensity mode indicator
goes out.
10. Connect the endoscope compatible with high intensity mode to the output
connector on the light source again.
11. Confirm that the high intensity mode indicator comes on.

If the high intensity mode indicator does not go off after the
endoscope is disconnected, immediately stop using the light
source and contact Olympus.
2. Confirm that the AUTO indicator and the MANUAL indicator light
alternately by pressing the selector (see Figure 4.9).

Perform the following inspection when using a video system with no BNC
connectors or when not using a video system.
2. Confirm that the following occurs when the brightness control switches are
pressed (see Figure 4.10):
S Each time the switch is pressed, a sound is heard and the brightness
level indicator moves up or down one level.
S When the switch is held down, successive sounds are heard and the
brightness level indicator moves continuously.
S The brightness increases or decreases accordingly.

S Once “MIN” has been reached, pressing the switch will not
cause any further change.
S If the endoscope is not connected, the LED indicators will
still change as described above, but the intensity of light

This is not a malfunction; the shutter feature limits the light
intensity in order to prevent accidents or injuries.
When this instrument is combined with any of the following products, be sure to
inspect the automatic brightness control.

end of the endoscope and an object is varied between 5 and 60 mm (see
Figure 4.12):

emergency lamp position while the main lamp is illuminated; the main lamp
will go out and the emergency lamp will light. Also confirm that the
emergency lamp indicator lights up (see Figure 4.14).

Chapter 5 Operation
Turn the light source ON and connect the endoscope to the output connector on
the front panel (see Figure 5.1).

2. Press the brightness control switches to set a brightness level suitable for
observation.
The standard setting is “0” (see Figure 5.2).

S The setting may be too bright or too dark depending on the endoscope
and video system being used. Use the brightness control switches to
change the brightness to an appropriate level.
S As the level goes from “–8” to “+8”, the endoscopic image turns
progressively brighter.
S Pressing a brightness control switches once moves the level one step;
holding the switch down moves the level continuously.
When this instrument and VISERA system center OTV-S7V are combined with
any of the following products, it is not possible to control the brightness on this
instrument. In this case, use the exposure level switch on the OTV-S7V.
Refer to the instruction manual of the OTV-S7V.
When this instrument is combined with a video system that does not use the
BNC cable or when this instrument is not combined with a video system, use
the manual brightness control function.
1. Confirm that the manual brightness control indicator on the front panel is
lit.
2. Press the brightness control switches to set a brightness level suitable for
observation (see Figure 5.3).

2. Disconnect the light guide cable, fiberscope or videoscope from the output
connector of the light source.
3. If the light source will not be used for an extended period of time,
disconnect the power cord.

If the lamp was previously ignited, the inside of the lamp access cover will be
extremely hot. Take out the lamp after allowing sufficient time for the lamp and
heatsink to be cooled.
To replace the main lamp, follow the procedure below. Use xenon lamp
MD-631.
To order a new lamp, contact Olympus.
1. Turn the light source OFF, and disconnect the power cord.
2. Turn the lamp cover knob (a) 90° counterclockwise to open the lamp
access cover (see Figure 6.2). Take out the hexagon wrench (see Figure
6.3).

3. After allowing sufficient time for the lamp and heat sinks (a) and (b) to
cool, loosen clamping knob (b) (front panel side) by turning it
counterclockwise. Then loosen clamping knobs (c) and (d) by turning them
counterclockwise.
4. Take out the lamp, with heat sinks (a) and (b) attached.
5. Using the hexagon wrench, loosen the three bolts on the lamp’s (“+”) side
(heat sink (b) side) and remove heat sink (b) (see Figure 6.4).

6. Disengage the clamp on heat sink (a) and pull out the lamp (see Figure
6.4).
7. Using a clean lint-free cloth, wipe off any residual heat compound from the
heat sink.

10. Apply heat compound to the hatched area on the “+” surface of the lamp in
the same manner. Then, fit heat sink (b) over the lamp’s “+” side. Tighten
the three bolts firmly using the hexagon wrench.
Align the guide pin on the heat sink (b) with the guide pin hole, and tighten
the bolts securely.
S Do not smear the lamp’s glass surface. Wipe off excess heat
compound on the lamp’s surface with a clean, soft cloth or
similar material. Heat compound may cause the coating to
peel or the lamp to explode.
S Do not touch the lamp’s glass surface. Fingerprints may
cause the lamp to explode.
11. Confirm that the surfaces of heat sinks (a) and (b) are parallel, then tighten
the clamp on heat sink (a) (see Figure 6.6). Insert this assembly into the
lamp housing fitting the guide pin into the guide pin hole of heat sink (b),
then securely tighten clamping knobs (c) and (d), in that order (see Figure
6.7).

12. Tighten clamping knob (b) firmly to connect heat sink (a) tightly (see
Figure 6.7).
13. Put the hexagon wrench back into the lamp access cover. Close the lamp
access cover and turn the lamp cover knob (a) all the way to the lock mark
position.
The light source will not function unless the cover is closed tightly and the
lamp cover knob (a) is turned to the lock mark position (see Figure 6.8).

14. Replace the lamp life meter on the front panel. Pull out the old lamp life
meter from the light source, and push in the new one (see Figure 6.9).

Connect the lamp life meter so that its letters and numbers
can be read correctly. If it is installed upside–down, the lamp
life meter may be damaged.
7.1 Care
If the light source becomes soiled, perform the following cleaning procedure
immediately after use. If cleaning is delayed, organic debris will solidify and it
may be difficult to effectively clean the light source. The equipment should be
cleaned routinely.
1. Turn the light source OFF and disconnect the power cord.
2. Should the equipment become soiled with blood or other potentially
infectious materials, first wipe off all gross debris using a soft, lint-free
cloth moistened with detergent solution.
3. Wipe the outside of the unit using a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with 70%
ethyl or isopropyl alcohol to remove dust, dirt, etc.
7.2 Storage
1. Turn the light source OFF and disconnect the power cord.
2. Disconnect all ancillary equipment from the light source.
3. Make sure that the cords are not excessively bent or coiled during storage,
and do not place anything on top of the cords.
7.3 Disposal
When disposing of this product, or any of its components, follow all applicable
national and local laws and guidelines.
