Summary of Chapter 9

About Integration of Computers to Support Learning

This chapter we explored ways that students can use computer for learning, examining
two basic categories of computer use :

1. Computer as teacher
Is often labeled computer assisted instruction (CAI), where the computer delivers
instruction to the student.

Scenario
Using computer as a teacher
✓ CAI usually is used in a supporting or adjunct role
✓ CAI is appropriate for certain learning goal
✓ CAI can help students while freeing the teacher for other things

Common form of CAI include :

➢ Drill and Practice
Characteristics :
• Interactivity
• Immediate feedback
• Infinite patience
• Variable level of difficulty
➢ Tutorial
Characteristics :
• Dynamic presentation
• Embedded question
• Brancbing
• Record-keeping
➢ Simulation
• Control of multiple variables
• Dynamic presentation
• Time manipulation
➢ Instructional game
• Motivation
• Game structure
• Sensory appeal
➢ Problem solving
• Focus on specific types of problems
• Practice
• Variety

Integrated Learning System

Are the most complex and sophisticated computer system that function as a teacher. They
combine comprehensive computer assisted instruction (CAI), any for all of the categories
mentioned previously, and computer management features into a single networked computer
delivery system. They are designed to provide a cycle of instruction, assessment, and
prescription for a particular subject matter-all on the computer.

2. Computer As Assistant
Refer to the use of the computer as a productivity tool for common task.

Scenario :
What can we learn about the use of the computer as assistant
✓ Content comes first
✓ Computer productivity tools offer benefits
✓ Using computer productivity tool can help students achieve learning goals
✓ Extensive software knowledge is not necessarily required

Typical computer application in this category include :

➢ Word processor
Student can use word processor to :
• Write papers, stories, poem, etc.
• Do writing related activities
• Do exercise or study
➢ Graphics tools
• Creative drawing
• Illustration of work
• Charting or graphing
• Concept maps
➢ Spreadsheet
• Manage financial information
• Keep records
• Create chart and graphs
• Perform complex calculation
• Perform “what-if”
➢ Data base
• Locate information in prepared database
• Develop problem solving and higher order thinking skills
• Develop original database
➢ Presentation software
• Make in class presentation or report
• Store and display electronic portfolios
• Transfer work to other media

One special category of computer as assistant is when the student assume the role of the
teacher by creating multimedia or hypermedia product using an authoring tool. This use of the
computer for learning requires that the student both develop content expertise and
communicate it to others in an organized fashion.
