A street sweeper is working on his area when he noticed an

open manhole. For the safety of the pedestrians, he knows that he
must find a cover for the open manhole. He found an old
manhole cover in their stock room that has a top surface area of
2000 square centimeters. If the diameter of the open manhole is
50 cm, would the old manhole cover be useful?

is It

Here is how to answer the problem above.

 To know if the street sweeper would be able to use the cover

he found in their stock room, we have to compare the area
of the open manhole to the area of the cover.

5
The diameter of the open manhole is 50 cm therefore, its
radius is 25 cm. (Note: π =3.14)
A= π x r x r ( A= π r 2 )
= 3.14 x 25 cm x 25 cm
= 3.14 x 625 cm2
=1, 962.5 cm2
The area of the open manhole is 1, 962.5 cm2.

Since, the area of the old manhole cover is 2000 cm2, it is

obviously bigger than the open manhole. So, the old manhole
cover can be used to cover the open manhole for the mean time
while finding the exact cover of the said open manhole.

To understand more on finding the area of a circle, analyze

the picture below.

.A

In Circle A above, the black outline around the figure is what

we measure when we want to know the circumference of the
circle. Meanwhile, the space with grid lines is the area.
h

Th
s

The formula for the area of a circle is derived from the

formula of the area of a parallelogram. Recall the formula for the
area of a parallelogram which is the product of the length of its
base and height (A=bh).

6
1. First, we make the circle 2. We know that the
whose radius is r. circumference of the given
circle is given by the formula
C=2πr.
r
Half of it will be:
𝐶 2𝜋𝑟
=
2 2
𝐶
= πr
2
πr
r r

πr

3. Suppose: Then we arrange the parts in one

row. The curve will be the length of
the base of the parallelogram and
the length of the radius will be its
height.

πr

We know that the area of a parallelogram is:

A= b x h
So, as for the circle, which is made into a parallelogram,
the length of the base corresponds to πr and the height is r.
Formula for Area of a Circle: A= πr x r or A= πr2

7
Example 1:
Find the area of the circle with a radius of 6m.

Solution:

r =6m A= πr2
= 3.14 x 6m x 6m
A = 113.04 m2

Example 2:
Find the area of the circle with a diameter of 10cm.
(Since the given is diameter, we need to get the value of
the radius. Radius is half of the diameter; therefore, the
radius is 5cm.)

Solution:
d =10cm A = πr2
= 3.14 x 5cm x 5cm
A = 78.5 cm2

Example 3:

A cow is tied to a peg using a 2.4 meter string. How

large is the area within, which the cow can roam and
eat grass?

Solution: Using the 4-Step Plan

1.Understanding the problem

 What do I know? -A cow is tied using a
2.4 meter string
 What is asked? -The area that the cow can
roam and eat grass
 What are given? -2.4 meter string which is
actually the radius of the
circular area

8
2. Make a Plan
 What will I do? I will find the area of the
circle given the 2.4 meter
string as radius
 What is the number sentence? A= π (2.4m)2

3. Solve/ Carry out the Plan A= πr2

= 3.14 (2.4m)2
=3.14 (5.76m2)
=18.0864m2 or about
18.10 m2 rounded to two
decimal places.
4. Check and Look back Therefore, the cow can
roam and eat grass within an
approximate area of
18.10 m2.

I Have Learned

The area of a circle is the number of square units inside that

circle. It can be computed by A = πr2
The following are the Steps in Solving Routine and Non-
Routine Problems Involving Area of a Circle:

•Understand- Know what is asked, what are given.

1
•Make a Plan- Know the operation/s or formula to be used.
2 Write the number sentence.

•Solve/Carry out the Plan- Write the correct units/ label

your answer. Use other strategies in solving the problem
3
like table method, drawing or making a diagram to solve.
•Check and Look Back- Review and check your answer.
4

I Can Do

Construct an illustration of any objects that can be

associated with circle like paper circle clock, etc. with a diameter
of 12 inches.
Be creative in making your output. You can use any
materials to make your output creative.
