Tutorial 6

The document provides tutorial problems for determining moments of forces using cross products and vector formulations. It includes 10 problems calculating moments of various forces about given points, determining direction angles of moment vectors, and finding perpendicular distances and coordinates related to force vectors and moments. The problems cover topics such as moments of forces, direction angles, radius and curved rods, perpendicular forces, inclined planes, and forces on hatches.

Moment of a Force (Vector Formulation)

5
1- Determine the moment of the force F about point O.
Express the result as a Cartesian vector.

𝑀𝑂 = {−40𝑖 − 44𝑗 − 8𝑘} kN.m

6
2- The 20-N horizontal force acts on the handle of the socket
wrench. Determine the moment of this force about point O.
Specify the coordinate direction angles α, β, γ of the moment
axis.
α = 81.8°
β = 75.7°
γ = 163°

7
3- The curved rod lies in the x–y plane and has a radius of 3 m.
If a force of F = 80 N acts at its end as shown, determine the
moment of this force about point B.

8
4- A 20-N horizontal force is applied perpendicular to the
handle of the socket wrench. Determine the magnitude and
the coordinate direction angles of the moment created by
this force about point O.

9
5- Determine the coordinate direction angles α, β, γ of force F, so
that the moment of F about O is zero.

10
6- Determine the moment produced by force FB about point O.
Express the result as a Cartesian vector.
𝑀𝑂 = −1.80𝑖 kN.m

11
7- Determine the smallest force F that must be applied along the
rope in order to cause the curved rod, which has a radius of 4 m, to
fail at the support A. This requires a moment of M = 1500 N.m to be
developed at A.

12
8- The force F = {6i + 8j + 10k} N creates a moment about point O of MO
= {-14i + 8j + 2k} N.m. If the force passes through a point having an x
coordinate of 1 m, determine the y and z coordinates of the point. Also,
realizing that MO = Fd, determine the perpendicular distance d from
point O to the line of action of F. Note: The figure shows F and MO in an
arbitrary position.
y=1m
z=3m
d = 1.15 m

13
9- Force F acts perpendicular to the inclined plane. Determine
the moment produced by F about point A. Express the result as a
Cartesian vector.
𝑀𝐴 = 1.56𝑖 − 0.750𝑗 − 1.00𝑘 kN.m

14
10- Strut AB of the 1-m-diameter hatch door exerts a force of
450 N on point B. Determine the moment of this force about
point O.
𝑀𝑂 = {373𝑖 − 99.9𝑗 + 173𝑘} N.m
