UNIT 1

BASICS AND STATICS OF PARTICLES

1. The boat is to be pulled onto the shore using two ropes. Determine the
magnitudes of forces T and P acting in each rope in order to develop a resultant
force F1 = 100kN directed along the keel axis a-a as shown. The angle θ= 40°, θ 1=
30°.

2. Determine the length of the cord AC in figure so that the 8kg lamp is suspended in
the position shown. The undeformed length of the spring AB is lAB = 0.4m and the
spring has a stiffness of kAB = 300N/m

3. Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant of the concurrent force
system shown in fig.
4. If five forces act on a particle as shown in figure and the algebraic sum of
horizontal components of all these forces is –329.904N, Calculate the magnitude of
P and the resultant of all the forces.

5. The resultant of two concurrent forces, when they act at an angle of 60° is 14N. If
the same forces are acting at right angles, their resultant is √136N. Determine the
magnitude of the two forces.
6. If five forces act on a particle as shown in figure determine the magnitude and
direction of the resultant force.

7. A force acts at the origin of a coordinate system in a direction defined by the

angles θx = 70.9° and θy = 144.9°. Knowing that the z-component of force is –52N,
Determine, the angle θz, the magnitude of force ‘F’, the component of force ‘F’ along
x and y directions and the component of force ‘F’ on a line through the origin and the
point ( 1, -2, 1).
8. Determine the magnitudes F1, F2 and F3 for the equilibrium of the particle. Given
F4 = 10kN, F5=2.5kN, α=15°, β = 30°, c=8 and d=25.

9. A force F with a magnitude of 100N is applied at the origin O of the axes x-y-z as
shown in fig. The line of action of F passes through a point A whose co-ordinates are
3m, 4m and 5m. Determine (i) the x,y,z scalar components of F (ii) the projection of
Fxy on F on x-y planes (iii) the projection of F along the line OB.

10. A metal guy rope tied to a peg at P as shown in fig. keeps an electric post in
equilibrium. The force in the guy rope is 1.25kN. Find the components of force at P
and the angles of inclination of the force with the three rectangular axes.
11. Forces 50kN, 30kN and 110kN are concurrent at the origin and are respectively
directed through the points whose co-ordinates are A(2.4, 1.2, 7.2), B(6, -3, 7.5) and
C(-3, -2, 1). Determine the equilibrant of the system.

12. A tripod is acted upon by forces at ‘p’ as follows: 20kN along positive x direction,
40kN along the negative y direction. Three legs rest on ground at points A ( -4, 0, 0) ,
B (5, 0, 2) and C ( -2, 0, 3 ). Height of ‘p’ above origin is 10m. Coordinate of P (0, 10,
0). Find the forces in the legs of tripod.
